    ahh Cloghie the greatest England manager we never had 8-)

    Certainly was -{

    His quote on not getting the job was fantastic;

    I am amazed that you think someone should be suspended for something that is penalized by a warning or at most a yellow card. In matters like this I always assume that the referee and the FIFA officials know the rules better than I do. If Krul or Robben did anything that is so out of the ordinary that it should be followed by a suspension I assume (and hope) that the FIFA and referee will enforce the rules hard and fair.

    However, I have decided a long time ago that I will not argue anything with you, Bond or other issues, on this forum because I have often seen it end in personal insults, questioning of judgement and/or character and sometimes a ban of the members involved. It is a shame that your aggressive and provocative responses in the past forces me to do this but I will not get involved in a discussion that is solely based on opinion with someone like you.

    I'm not sure even FIFA have rules for the behaviour those two players exhibited...

    I see you are straight out of the blocks with the personal insults !

    I think you need to get your facts straight before you toss the toys out of the pram again...I'd ask you to back up your accusations but it's pointless as you can't...I suggest we leave this here and let the thread carry on...

    Maybe this is just a matter of the fact that we are not in the same room together having a drink. Sometimes something that is not at all meant that way comes across as harsh when it is written down, maybe/hopefully that was the case here. 1746 posts in I hope I have established myself as a member not looking for an argument either.

    So now we are down to four. Once again, form holds and the favorites go through. It's sad that the open, free-flowing football of the group stage is a distant memory -- but it's certainly not surprising, because this is what the knockout phase usually delivers.

    Germany-France was a total snooze-fest, with one notable exception: I loved Hummels' goal. How rare to see a header like that -- he just wrestled for position and never even left the ground. Brilliantly taken.

    Not sure what the Spanish ref was thinking in Brazil-Colombia other than "I certainly don't want any poor soul to miss the semifinal through yellow-card accumulation." Still, Thiago Silva finally gave him no choice, and now Neymar will miss out anyway because the ref couldn't control the game. The Brazilian howls of protest (especially Scolari's) are total garbage, given the fouls they inflicted on James Rodriguez and his teammates.

    Higuain smartly capitalizes on a deflection, and Argentina parks the bus for 82 minutes. Yaaaaaawwwwwn.

    Last 15 minutes plus extra time of Netherlands-Colombia were excellent. The Krul substitution was genius. Louis van Gaal has shown himself to be a manager whose tactical decisions actually make a difference (which he never hesitates to point out whenever he is near a microphone). If I were a Man Utd supporter -- which I most certainly am not -- I would be happy. As for Krul's behavior in the PK phase, I certainly found it unseemly, but I am hard-pressed to equate it to cheating. At the end of the day, the Costa Ricans simply took lousy penalties.

    Predictions for the semifinals:
    -- I will go against the grain and say that Neymar's absence will finally inspire his teammates to step up their games, now that they cannot rely on him. Brazil find a way to win, 2-1 or 3-2.
    -- Messi and his mates overcome the loss of di Maria, Van Persie remains in his stupor, and Argentina dispatches the Netherlands, 1-0 or 2-0.
    -- The resulting Brazil-Argentina final is relocated out of Rio to a venue right on the border between the two countries. Near Iguazu Falls, in fact, at a never-used stadium built by Hugo Drax. :D
    Hilly...you old devil!

    Though I agree with most of your football comments, I strongly disagree with you here.
    I'd say that it was sheer luck! Certainly the new goalie confused the CR players but if that would have gone wrong, they'd crucified him in the Netherlands.

    Bringing an unexperienced 2 nd man with such a bad record in a penalty shootout in such an important game.... Everybody would have jumped on it and him!

    Not sure if the Man U happiness will last very long. In Munich he messed up with all his bosses, the press and many players in short time.
    Yes, he discovered Müller but at the end if the day he's too dominant and stubborn ( anyone sees parallels with Sir Miles?? :D ) to spark up young players.

    Nobody there really misses him here.

    As for Kruls behavior: I'd hoped that someone would stick his finger into his own nose.
    Highly unfair imo but the referee accepted it.
    It was interesting to see that after 2 liht foulds against Robben - Ariel did not fall anymore :D

    Yeah I also agree that the CR / Dutch penalty shootout was pure luck and not some tactical genius decision by LVG which the manure fans are clinging too. I think I would have saved a few of them myself as they were all going to the keepers left and in the end it was getting obvious and tedious to watch. In saying that the Dutch were the deserved winners overall in 120 mins playing time though CR had some chances.

    As for Kruls behaviour, well its unsporting but I've seen it happen before with the keeper having "words" with the penalty taker etc nothing new but he was being a bit more obvious about it.

    My prediction of one of the big ones (Argentina or Brazil) going out in the Quarters failed, though my head predicts this time they will both go out (Argies especially with their dodgy defence and reliance on Messi) however I also have this feeling there might be some unjust referee decision that might favour Brazil in their game against Germany (I guess we are due more ref controversy!)

    Van Gaal said he only changed keepers as Krul was 'bigger'...if it works you look a genius - but how many times will you get away with it ?

    Van Gaal is a good manager - as long as everything goes for him...he will shake up Utd - but just how interested will he be in bringing youth through and re-setting up the youth system ?
    Looks like a short fix to me...something Mourinho would have done better...Utd missed a trick there...

    Fair enough. My "genius" comment was a bit OTT and is only "true" with the benefit of hindsight. What I probably should have said was that Van Gaal's decision was certainly gutsy and somewhat out-of-the box. He obviously planned it beforehand -- not often you see a team with a sub to spare after 119+ minutes. Especially risky because, as you say, it could have blown up in his face. I can't speak to his tenure in Munich (and as I said before I have no love lost for Man Utd) but despite his outsized ego I would rather have a manager like that than one who defaults to playing it safe because it's easier to deflect blame that way.

    I thought vG's substitution was daring in as much as if it had failed he would have been pilloried. As others have said, full marks to him for doing it despite the massive criticism he would have received if Krul had faltered slightly on even one kick - ie: the ball trickling between his legs as he toppled over backwards distracted by someone in short-shorts in row 3!

    For the first time in my life, I'm just not excited by the semi-finals. Unless things change massively, I just don't expect either match to be a classic. The only hope we have for a great game between now and Sunday is if it's Brazil v Argentina in the Final...and only then because there's a good chance it will be the first ever final to end with only four players left on the pitch for each side and half of Rio on fire outside.

    Haha - yeah that would be one hell of a final, though the diving might get even MORE out of hand!
