Have yet to watch this last series...but they are all lined up and ready to go on the hard drive...will watch them back to back over a couple of days when I get the time...been a superb series so far -{
John Logan said that it was only going to be 3 seasons from the start, I believe him but I also think lower viewership, and as you said the price of such a great cast and sets may have made Showtime decide to pull the plug. In a way I feel like its Firefly, a great show with so much more potential then what we were left with.
Showtime actually said they were happy to pick up a fourth season but Logan insisted that the show had run it's course and wanted to end it.
It is shame because I didn't enjoy this season as much as the other two because the gang are all separated for much of it and I was hoping there would be a season 4 so they could explore the Egyptian connections ...
Still, it was fun while it lasted and Tim Dalton was very Bondian at times.

I never heard anything about Showtime ending Penny Dreadful either and usually you would hear something months in advance. I was hoping for a Season 4 and dreaming they would show "Ferdinand Lyle" in Egypt and discovering The Mummy. Eva Green could arise from the grave in her nightgown (like those old Hammer movies or Italian movies) and stand there in the cemetery showing her fangs. I liked the old Indian man who we found out is the Big Master Werewolf. Yes, I agree. So many more tales that could have been told. Interesting how none of the stars said anything that it would be "The End". If they don't say anything after the Season 3 DVD set comes out and usually by October, they would be filming Season 4, then I guess it would be done. I wonder if John Logan will be too busy with writing the next script for James Bond 007.

That would have been great.
Loved Ferdinand Lyle, one of the best characters to appear in any show for a long time. Apparently Simon Russell Beale was too busy to appear more in Season 3.
I suppose it's one of the problems of having such a good cast and writers. They're all in demand with film and stage work and want to do other projects, so committing to a TV show for years on end wasn't going to happen.
I was actually taking bets how long Tim Dalton was going to stay as he doesn't strike me as an actor who will stay because it's comfortable.
I'm still mourning the end of this show! I Really think there were so many stories left to tell. For instance Dr. Jekyll was a massive waste of a character with no payoff.

I'm livid about the way it ended ... what a kop out and it would appear the actors had no idea either.
Showtime actually wanted a fourth series but John Logan said 'no'.
It actually had a lot of scope especially without the focus on Vanessa. Lots more Victorian ghosts and ghoulies to chase.

yeah especially after Mr. Lyle's off hand comment about going to Egypt, I immediately thought "oh cool season 4 will have a mummy!"
I haven't finished it yet, but at one point in the 3rd season, Dalton walks in and says something like I turn up everywhere, and I thought yep he's still Bond.
A lone voice of dissent here I'm afraid. Watched all 3 seasons and found this to be overblown and unjustifiably praised in my opinion. There came a point (fairly early on unfortunately) when I asked myself why I was continuing to watch but then it just becomes about having ticked a box rather than enjoying the series.
Outside of Eva Green's performance I found very little to commend here and it pales in comparison to Game of Thrones...
