Danjaq_Off has quite an interesting example here. Bit of insider goss. Back in 1997 on the set of Tomorrow Never Dies it was always intended that practical or section 5 Walther P99 pistols modified to discharge blank cartridges would be utilised however due to "technical difficulties" when using a suppressor there were cycling issues so Walther's own P99 PAK blank fire training pistol was utilised to great effect. One issue the producers had were the PAK's raised white engravings which were very visible on playback so one of the handlers (CT) was given the task to blank out the engravings using a permanent black marker. This process was repeated on TWINE, DAD and Casino Royale and of course Danjaq_Off's personal blank fire piece listed here on AJB007 -{

Except Danjaq-off did a rubbish job and the new owner should do it again ) It's easy to do and the old pen will come off easy with a wipe of lighter fluid. Sharpies work best. They used them to touch up the PPK/S box between takes, which is why you see Dan close it very carefully in that scene
Did they black out the entire slide for the screen used prop? Or did they just black out the white markings?
The slides are coated in black tenifer (anti-corrosion) finish so only the raised white engravings were blanked out. One was sprayed black and baked to ensure no blank fire engravings could be seen. The one in the photo was one which had been blanked out with an industry product similar to boot polish and then heavily buffed. Over the years it has been used on numerous non-Bond productions and as yet the white engravings have not been uncovered although handling has made the finish a bit flat -{
