Some of my favorite themes are: Live And Let Die, A View To A Kill, Skyfall, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye, Die Another Day and Licence To Kill. Many others too!

Now that someone else has revived this thread, I don't feel so bad about responding. I'll mention my best 4 and worst 4, since those come very easily to me.

Best: The Living Daylights, Moonraker, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever

Worst: GoldenEye, Skyfall, Licence to Kill, Dr. No

Good lists. But I would have to put LALD in as one of the best.

Best: OHMSS, YOLT, TB, DAF, MR, TLD, AVTAK, GF, FRWL, OP, TMWTGG.

The rest aren't by John Barry.
  • Saunders009Saunders009 Posts: 26MI6 Agent
    BEST: TLD, OHMSS, CR

WORST: (In decending order) LTK, FYEO, GE

I do love all of Barry's scores, even OP. The franchise owes so much to his musical genius.

Every John Barry score is wonderful.

    I really like LALD though and thought George Martin did a terrific job. Coupled with McCartney's title song, the whole score works really well for me -{

I love the LALD score, but John Barry's best scores are the top for me both musically and how they sound the best for Bond films. However, LALD is probably the only Bond score that isn't by John Barry or David Arnold that doesn't detract from the Bond feel of the movie, even though it doesn't have a Bond sound. Marvin Hamlisch also got the Bond feel in most of his score, but there are some parts that seriously detract from the film by sounding too 70s. That's probably why so many people here hate Bill Conti's score. If John Barry scored FYEO it would probably be my favourite Bond film. On the other hand, I really love Conti's score. It is very well written and well developed, and it's a very powerful score. It's just not Bond and takes away from the Bond feel, just like Serra does.

My favourite scores were all of Barry's.
That said, my favourites of Barry's were GF, DAF & TLD.
The worst were Sera's GE (not all of it though) & Conti's FYEO (pretty much all of it).
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.
    #1.TLD/LTK 2.TND 3.GF 4.GE 5.DN 6.FYEO 7.FRWL 8.TMWTGG 9.TWINE 10.YOLT/QOS

Best would be in chrono order TB, OHMSS, OP, TLD.

Anything by Barry is awesome, I love how it complements the film (eg the quirky sounds of DAF, such as the elevator fight), and they even elevate a bad film.

    Worst is LTK, GE, FYEO.

Personally, my favorite scores would have to be the scores for: On Her Majesty's Secret Service, A View To A Kill and The Living Daylights by John Barry, and especially For Your Eyes Only by Bill Conti.

Honorable mention: The Spy Who Loved Me by Marvin Hamlisch

Least favorite... hmm. Can't really comment. Probably anything from the late Pierce Brosnan era but I really can't pick.
    1. FYEO 2. OHMSS 3. LTK 4. FRWL 5. TLD 6. TSWLM 7. AVTAK 8. GF 9. MR 10. TB 11. OP 12. SF 13. DN 14. SP 15. LALD 16. GE 17. CR 18. YOLT 19. TWINE 20. TMWTGG 21. NTTD 22. TND 23. QOS 24. NSNA 25. DAD 26. DAF 27. CR '67

    1. Dalton 2. Moore 3. Connery 4. Lazenby 5. Craig 6. Brosnan

    Best:
You Only Live Twice - beautiful title theme, incomparable 'Space March' theme.
OHMSS - wonderful themes and motifs throughout.

    Worst:
Dr.No (compare with Barry's FRWL just a year later to hear how dated it is).
    GoldenEye, obviously.

There can't be many who like the GoldenEye soundtrack.

I love Newman's Skyfall. Took a little while to get use to as it was so different to any other Bond Score. Can't wait to hear what he has in store for Spectre!
FYEO is a personal fav, I love what Conti did for the gunbarrel sequence, ski chase and car chase. Runaway is an amazing piece.
I find Moonraker and YOLT to have the most beauitful pieces. Ironic how they are both quite campy films. I love mountains and Sunsets, and the orchestral version of Bassey's Moonraker.
AVTAK is fantastic, He's dangerous and Bond Meets Stacey are both superb!
I don't dislike any soundtrack in particulular, I reckon everyone did a good job, in away. Except some are just simply forgettable.

I would think the worst score is the film with madonna song, and some from the 80's
About the best I liked casino royale, song and theme, skyfall, golden eye, about song and animation, and I liked the spy who loved me.
goldfinger was not too bad, as most of the early perido, with powerfull songs the animation is also interesting, using titles on real women.
I like the song of man with golden gun, but not the animation.

About the james bond shooting, I prefer Pierce Brosnan, efficient, fast and proud, then Daniel Craig, as a warrior, then Thimothy Dalton, then the one who made only one film, then Sean Connery and last Roger Moore, his shoot is really not terrific , slow, with a strange position and a weird leg.
Most of Sean Connery movies stard on bottom right and most of Roger Moore ones start on Middle left.
What i interesting is the Danie l Craig movies have no traditionnal"7 dots ", the movies starts with intro, then at beginning or end, we see the large barrel and Daniel Craig shooting.

    Overall: TLD

    Barry: TLD
    Arnold: QoS
    Other: FYEO

Worst Barry: AVTAK - Best title song from all the Bonds, but the score doesn't work as well as TND does in the same attempted style.
Worst Arnold: TND - not enough structure, too experimental, tries to incorporate too much Barry influence.
Worst Other: GE - We Share The Same Passions is good but the rest is bloody odd.
    1. TWINE 2. FYEO 3. MR 4. TLD 5. TSWLM 6. OHMSS 7. DN 8. OP 9. AVTAK 10. TMWTGG 11. QoS 12. GE 13. CR 14. TB 15. FRWL 16. TND 17. LTK 18. GF 19. SF 20. LaLD 21. YOLT 22. NTTD 23. DAD 24. DAF. 25. SP

For mine Thunderball is the best. The scores of OHMSS, YOLT and DAF round out my top four.

I agree as well. TMWTGG is probably just the least interesting of Barry's Bond scores, though it defined the new sound Barry would use for Moore's Bond, which was clearly a lot different from the Connery sound.

TMWTGG is usually regarded as the weakest of Barry's Bond scores.
Usually JB would compose a secondary theme (eg TB has "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", OHMSS has "We Have All The Time In The World") but here he relies on his main theme whether for love scenes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_rvOxJ-HWo or action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIYGopyS-RY. This approach worked just fine with GF, but much less so here. Granted, he had a limited time to work on his music for this film- two weeks- but even here he manages to provide variety https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wmrceGewqI and colour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pmpS0vl0mw as well as humour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKNPRAGQANM
He had done far, far better work before- and would do later- but his work still sounds like James Bond music should, and even at his weakest he still outshines those who would come after.

Though it only has one theme, there are meaningful repeating motifs throughout the score as well.
