This is the best Roger moore one and in my top 10, I can understand where you are coming from, I feel live and let die is moores worst as it is the most boringest bond film eva.
So...Moonraker was yesterday evening's viewing treat.
The "marmite one" of the Roger Moore era.
I have to say I am firmly on the "love it" side of the fence with this one, and enjoyed it far more that TSWLM.
The PTS is a lot of fun, especially with Jaws returning to menace Bond again so early in the film. Only to have him plummet through the air in true Wile E. Coyote style (he really learned nothing from TSWLM did he?).
I actually found myself laughing whilst rolling my eyes a bit.
Anyways, on to the film proper and the Moonraker shuttle has been hijacked and Bond is the man for the job of finding it, and also finding out what happened. The California scenes with Drax were a lot of fun and there is some great cinematography here, everything looks good with a very nice late 70's sheen to it.
Drax is a great villain, his very reserved manner makes him seem quite calculated and cold, he also has some great lines that are well delivered (well done here Michael Lonsdale). He's also a bit of a cad, and thinks nothing of killing his own employees if they are unfortunate enough to warrant his displeasure. I also love how he becomes more and more exasperated at his failed attempts to dispose of Bond (at the very last one on the space station he even lets out a little disbelieving "guffaw").
The locations in Moonraker are fantastic, California, Venice, Rio de Janiero and finally the Amazon jungle and Outer Space! you can again tell that a vast amount of money was spent on the production of this film. Also you can heavily see the Star Wars influence, particularly in the final act from Drax's Amazon lair onwards, some things here look exactly the same as Star Wars (it's almost as if they borrowed some of the sets).
Even people who dislike the film cannot say that Roger does not do a good turn as Bond in it. He gets right into the thick of things and it really does seem like he is doing some globetrotting "spying and investigating" unlike in TSWLM, where they just arsed about in Sardinia and visited Stromberg once. Roger also did not annoy me in Moonraker the way he did in TSWLM with his endless quips and smug one-liners. Don't get me wrong, they are present in Moonraker, but they are done far better and he delivers them without as much "smugness".
Does it have some far fetched stuff in it? erm...YES! probably more so than any other Bond film. But this is part of the appeal I think.
Let me name a couple:
Jaws saved by a circus tent
Hovercraft Gondola complete with pigeon double-take
Bond in outer space
Space laser battle between astronauts (this was INSANE!)
These parts are admittedly a bit silly, but if you can put up with them, you are rewarded with what is actually a great entry into the franchise. The people who really complain about the space bit are digging a bit too deep methinks. They do go into space, but Bond really does not have to do much apart from give Drax a twatting and shoot a Poison cannister with a laser. He does not have to do any space piloting or anything like that, he just does what he usually does, but in space.
Roger is at his best, the actual storyline (if a bit far fetched) is good and worth following, the Bond girl is also very good (there is far better chemistry here than with Barbara Bach I think).
All in all I think Moonraker is great, it is a departure from what we are used to, but in a really good way. Switch your brain off at the silly bits and enjoy!
I have bought the Bluray collection a few days ago and so far I am amazed by the quality of the conversions. A movie like LALD looks so much better. However, I think they could have done a lot better with the special features. Nothing new compared to the Ultimate Edition DVDs.

Cheers! Moonraker is quite a polarizing entry and I too love it. You do a great job describing why and I often felt myself nodding in agreement while looking at my screen )
MR is also one of the most beautiful blu-ray transfers to my untrained eye.
I'm actually really excited to have found this thread. What I will do is when I go to watch the Bond films starting with Dr. No I will post my own little review of quality, the film itself, and all of those goodies. I think you guys would be interested in what a 21 year old thinks of all of these films.

Sorry that I am a little late to the party, I just got a BLu Ray player for Christmas and I have begun collecting the James Bond films(Well the ones that I like anyway) on Blu Ray.

You may not be a completist, like me, but you will probably find that getting the whole collection will work out cheaper (or the same) as picking just your favourites. I'm watching my Blu-ray 007 collection slowly (only just finished Thunderball), and it's like watching those movies for the first time! So many details I never noticed before.
I gave my vhs collection to a local kid who likes the Bond films, took my
Old DVD collection ( not the boxed one) to that exchange shop for a price
They offered me something like £12 for the lot. ) So I kept them for my
Studio and can watch them while working on the computer.

They proper take the p*ss!
They would have taken them off you for that, then put them back on the shelf that afternoon for about £50.
I try my best not to go in them any more, queueing for half an hour to be robbed of my stuff and pay top dollar for theirs. No thanks. I am slowly learning life's lessons!
I prefer to buy stuff online now, and charity bag as much of my old stuff as I can afford to. I would rather they have it than a grasping greedy exchange shop.
I would much rather give a Bond item away to another fan, who can hopefully
Get some fun out of it. I gave away a " seen it, DVD board game" as I had one and
Was given another as a present, so I didn't need it.
I'm just hoping someone has a spare DB10 they don't need !

Sorry, no, I don't need every Bond on BR, just ones that look way greater on BR. Most of my DVD's look just fine. :007)
Maybe I'm a bit ocd but if I started I'd have to get them all ) an example
would be NSNA ( my least favourite Bond film) I have it on DVD but had to get it
On bluray, just to complete the set.

There are ones I don't pray to the temple of like SF or TSWLM that I'm fine with on DVD. I was thinking QOS would be my next one though. Yeah, that's next.
Long before bluray, DVD,vhs etc, many people had home projectors, and could
Buy small film reels, mainly of trailers etc.
I was wondering if anyone on AJB, may have some ( I remember reading long
Ago the Thunderball film trailer was much sought after as it had, plenty of Fiona
Driving Bond to his hotel ) and if they still watch them from time to time ?
Or would they have some of the actual films, as I know Bob Monkhouse got into
Trouble years ago for lending his copy of Goldfinger to a friend for his kids birthday
party.
