I felt like he would have been up there with with Connery. I have him behind Connery and Craig. IMO he would have been the best if he made 2 more at least but 2 wasn't enough for even though TLD or LTK were excellent.

IMHO, He is one of the best Bonds -{ . I think the films would have gone on
In the direction they went. As with GoldenEye etc, a lighter touch and big
    Action sequences.
They took a chance with LTK and the audience after years of Roger Moore
Weren't ready :# it would only be with the reboot that they felt cconfident
Enough to " go for it again ", and luckily this time the audience was ready. :#

I definitely agree with you TP and I know this is off topic but do you think that Pierce would have for into TLD and LTK ?

I liked PB, and I don't think the films went in the direction he expected. I
Remember in an interview he described how Bond was a flawed man
with many demons, which he hoped to explore. So perhaps he was
Trying to get closer closer to the Bond of the novels.
So I think he could have been very good in TLD and LTK sounds the
Kind of film he wanted to make.

Dalton definitely deserved a far better deal than the one he got; being stuck in his contract while the lawsuit shenanigans were being played out for 6 years. He could have made at least 2 more films and, judging by his performances in TLD and LTK, they could have been great additions to the Bond canon.

Sadly, its one of those things we'll never know.

I think he already is up there with Connery as the best. As Bond, I think he is every bit the equal of Connery, albeit that Connery is a better actor and has far greater presence on screen. From this Fleming purist's perspective, both of his performances, as well as Connery's first two, is very much in the same mould as the Fleming Bond, which is always a good thing. Although his role as Bond has been rather short lived, I think he has more than proved himself in those two films, much like Connery had in his first two performances.

Even if that were true, I'd rather it finished with a bang. Licence to Kill was a brilliant film and if the series were to end there, I would not be disappointed.

I actually can get behind this statement but for different reasons.

I loved TLD (not a big fan of LTK), and I don't even have an issue with Dalton. I think the issue is that Dalton wasn't a face that can carry a franchise as big as Bond. I like his portrayal, but when it comes right down to it he has very strange looks (at least to me personally) and part of this franchise is about appearances.

I would liken it to Zlatan Ibrahamovic vs Ronaldo (since I know your side of the pond may appreciate that analogy much better). Both fantastic players, but one of them has the look to carry brands and endorsements.

Just my two cents. My opinion, and just that, an opinion. (I know where these Dalton conversations go and they can get a little nasty).

I think the key question - as thunderpussy says - is "what sort of films would have worked for Dalton "? After all roger's second film sort of failed but they were able to reboot him in epic, stunt filled, humorous travelogue style. The writers then also started to know how to write for him

But Tim? I really don't think GoldenEye would have worked for him, so what would the direction be?
  • HigginsHiggins GermanyPosts: 16,619MI6 Agent
Contrary to Dalton, Roger Moore had immense starpower back then - even before he entered the 007 franchise.
TMWTGG was not overlay successful but after Harry's departure, Cubby was committed to do his own thing - with Roger.

And it turned out to be a full hit!

Although I liked his two Bonds a great deal, IMO Dalton did lack a little of the uber-charisma of the other actors who have played Bond. His performances are a little bit too, ummm, Shakespearean for my taste, though I'm sure Bond and EON would still have continued.

It's difficult to tell which kind of films Dalton would have really excelled at - he has neither the lighter touch of Moore and Brosnan, nor the believable toughness of Connery and Craig.

Though he is excellent and very watchable in Penny Dreadful, and he didn't make a bad Bond at all - just not quite as brilliant as the others... But just my opinion. {:)

I think the series would have continued just fine if Dalton had continued as Bond. He was such a refreshing break from the Roger Moore era and I believe his popularity would have grown as he starred in more films. I already have Dalton second behind Connery as the best Bond (although every once in a while I think Craig is beginning to overtake him), and I'm pretty sure if he had continued his run he would remain second on my list (sorry - I can't see anyone besting Sir Sean! :)) )

Sorta. I was around back then, and it was a common opinion among casual fans of the Bond series that A ) The movies were formulaic and B ) Moore was too long in the tooth to continue. The problem with Dalton is that he neither looked nor acted like the Bonds they were used to. One publication compared his looks to Joe Camel, and posted a Camel Cigarettes ad with the character in a tuxedo next to one of Dalton as James Bond. Dalton was good in The Living Daylights, but the film suffered from a weak villain and not enough tension between him and Bond. But License to Kill was a general disappointment. I was in college at the time, and people who saw it thought it was more like a Miami Vice episode. Friends of mine who'd seen it agreed that it suffered from other problems, too. The three females -- Taliso Soto, Pam Barnes, and Cary Lowell -- were either awful actresses or just miscast. The humor with Wayne Newton was flat and old fashioned. While the action sequences weren't bad, they didn't keep up with the better films of the period, like Die Hard.

Many of us had been waiting for years for a return to the Connery-esque Bond film and had long grown tired of the Moore campiness and the predictability. But Dalton didn't quite fit naturally into the role. The qualities that made him work well in other venues, such as Shakespearean roles, didn't seem to fit Bond. While people appreciated that he wasn't doing the gags as much, Dalton's inability to handle humor well also was problematic. He had a darkness to him -- and Roger Ebert, if I recall correctly, even described his face as saturnine -- that made him a turn off to the ladies in particular. If Dalton had continued, I think he would have gotten better. Goldeneye seems much more in keeping with his strengths.
