Royal marine commando school

HI guys im going to risk the wrath of a few of our members but here goes
have been watching the TV series called Royal marine commando school , very entertaining
and the the commentator keeps saying its the toughest course in the world , I don't know ,it probably is
and as a flag waving monachist Brit ,I would like to think so ,but having watched the French foreign legion train
and various US special forces train ,I don't know , my only extent of training comes from the police
from CS gas training, Baton training, riot police ,prison storming, being set on fire with petrol bombs
that was all hard , now im not knocking the marines or even saying its easy or I could do that
( I did apply at 19 but opted for the police instead ) so many apologise if ive trod on any toes ,not intended
but comments please on your own thoughts and or views /experiances

Certain much of the training will not be shown ( can't be shown to be too
Nasty on TV these days ).
I'm no expert but I did research the foreign legion and that was some of the
Toughest training I'd ever seen. Then again I love these type of programmes. )

The Domino Effect

Interesting topic, AS. Generally, I hear that the SAS/SEALs are the two toughest selection/training in the world. Depending on the source, some say that the SEALs BUD/S is the toughest selection and that the SAS basic training is the toughest, others say that SAS Sickener is the toughest selection and the SEALs basic training is the toughest. Of course, that may or may not take into consideration the SBS which is extraordinarily difficult but like to keep their secrets to themselves, the French Foreign Legion about which some has been written, or the Israelis who are also pretty secretive etc. The RM is undoubtedly one of the most demanding, but it will be interesting to hear what sort of response you get from people on here who may be more than 'book warriors' like me!

Stupidly I chose to reply to your post, even if I have no expert knowledge in this field. The Royal Marine Commandoes usually operate as elite amphibious infantry. They may very well be among the best trained light infantry in the world. But compared to pure special forces units I guess they can't be called the best trained in the world. I'm thinking of units like Delta force, SAS and Sayaret Matkal.

They haven't shown anything in that series, but to be honest, I wouldn't expect them too. You've just seen a basic introductory course and nothing even of that. If you want to get the slightest insight into RM training, you won't by watching that documentary. That lad clearing his rifle in front of his troop wouldn't have been chuckled at and forgotten during real training, he would have received such a beasting that he would never do it again, even in his dreams.

I'm not sure Callum Bond is quite up to our James' standard ... His mum is scarier than him )

I'm really enjoying the programme but I'm pretty sure we're not seeing anything of any consequence.

It's all been based on the newbies and how they are faring ... Nothing tactical or any of the actual training.

Think I've got a little crush on 'Froggy' . Anyone who can eat 5 Weetabix in one sitting impresses me!

Watching it last night, I got the feeling it's more about the private
Lives and the reasons for joining. As opposed to years ago I remember
Watching a show on officers training ( can't remember the name of it ).
I had always pictured officers as chinless toffs but this doc showed some of
Their training and it totally changed my mind, on exercise at night they
Had to board a helicopter, obviously other guys were waiting to stop them.
With night cameras it showed the all out fight ( rifle buts to the face etc ) to
Get in that helicopter at all costs. ( brilliant stuff) -{
This show is more " touchy feely " )

If the tv showed everyone how hard it really was, or how much you get smacked for being a bwad bwad little bwoy, the human rights activists and lawyers would go into overdrive and no one would want to join anymore.

Even my mate went through a tougher time doing his basic for the RAF!

Entertainment, seeing the 'meanwhile, back at home, mams bawling' kinda thing then yeah, it'll do.

As asp says, it's no where near real life, not many programmes on tv are to be honest, it's all planned, staged, scripted, set up or edited to manipulate your opinions.

It's interesting reading Twitter whilst the programme is on and how many people think it's appalling or how awful the foundation Corporal was and how rude they are !

It's unbelievable what people expect. You're training people to go and fight in horrendous conditions, see appalling things and ultimately kill another human being.

I know, not a colouring book or little red early learning car in sight!! Did have a decent playground though.

its a shame that they have shown the RM in such a bad light I can imagine the Taliban sitting at home pissing their selves laughing
at the antics of the new recruits saying oh now im really scared

I really must make a point of watching this TV show but I always seem to be working when it is on, although I think it is repeated on a Thursday night. There is also a James Bond connection here too lest we forget: Bond continuation author and thriller writer John Gardner was in 42 Commando Royal Marines near the end of World War II and he saw action in the Far East. In fact, James Bond himself likely had World War II commando training. -{

It's on +1 on channel 4 ( that's when I watch as at 9, We watch " The 100 ") &
On the next night on one of the other channel 4 stations I think, I 'm sure it must
Be on 4od catch up service.
Although it's not so much about the training, rather about the men and why they join
and how it effects their families etc.

Yes, that is an interesting slant on things - the families of servicemen and women are no doubt deeply affected by the whole thing too. That's something that's sadly rather overlooked I'm sure and so I'm glad that at least this programme is addressing the issue. -{

From a military perspective that's a very good thing. It's best to be underestimated rather than over estimated. From a tactical POV. Our forces, especially SF, receive too much publicity and exposure.

Well, it's certainly true that the special forces are over-publicised in the US - one thinks of the bin Laden assassination in May 2011 for just one instance. Perhaps it simply comes from our understandable human desire to create heroes?

I find it insulting for all the brave service men and women who
Defend us have to rely on a charity for various pieces of medical
Equipment and services. This should be provided by the bloody
Government as standard care ! It should not depend on charity. X-(

For the record the SAS is the toughest introduction training A friend of mine applied a big tough guy and former uk judo under 21 champion and 11 years active service in roayl highland fuseliers. He lasted 2 days by the end of second day he took off his boots and poured out the blood as they spent 14 hours treking and he wept like a baby and was sent packing.

They do seem to be quite tough -{ , I do seem to remember there was a
Series, on BBC2 I think years ago showing some of the SAS training, and
Survival techniques. I always remember it showed before the survival
Training you are searched ( even with a ribber glove ) to make sure
you haven't hidden anything ) , unless I mixing this up with something
Else from my DVD collection. )
