Rumour has it that an actor who played Bond in two films of the late 80's is masquerading on this board as a German Watch Expert ;)

Talking of McQueen - anybody own the Persol 714?

I see DC has wore them offscreen.

I kinda liked them when I tried on recently however they were 54s so I have bought a pair of 52 online (SM Edition). Presume the iriginals were 52s (McQueens didnt look too big)

Doubt I will pull the look off like the King of Cool though :D

I've been a huge fan of Persols for years. I've got a pair of the 714-SM in black, size 52. But they're still a tad wide for my face. I wish they would make a size 50. My daily wear is a pair of 3028S in the Havana/Blue combo, which are almost identical to the 714s, but they run a bit smaller, so they're a much better fit for my face.

I also ordered a pair of their new 9714S, which are also folding. I didn't get to try them on in a store, so we'll see how they fit when they arrive.

    Kind regards,
    Craig

Craig is a great choice for a McQueen tribute film--I watched Layer Cake after the CR DC announcement and told Janine, "Steve McQueen is the vibe I'm getting from the new Bond." I wonder if they will do an honest pic--McQueen was a major hellion off camera and then died in a hospital with a Bible marked to the place he was reading--

Might be too late by the time they get round to it though!!!

Interesting, was not aware of the new 9714S model! Will take a look!!

I bought the black / grey lens and light havana / blue polarised lens versions of the McQueens (was planning to keep one pair, whichever suits me better)

The Havana/Blue combo is certainly the most sought-after. My vote is to hang onto those. I owned them when they first came out (back in 2010, I believe), but I sold them as they were only available in size 54mm, and those were way to big for me. Wish I had kept them simply as a collector's piece. When Persol finally released the SMs in 52mm, I couldn't find the Havana/Blue combo anywhere, not at least for less than $500. I opted for the Black/Grey pair as I was already wearing the 3028S regularly.

    Definitely check out the 9714S - http://www.persol.com/usa/sunglasses/icons/PO9714S/108-58#b
They look a bit more slim and sleeker in design. No blue lens combo though... yet.

    Kind regards,
    Craig

I think Mr Porter currently has all 3 McQueen Persol Editions in sizes 52 and 54.

The colour combo that I liked the other day was Dark Havana and brown lens but I believe was only released in the first run ltd edition as a size 54?

I pick up all my purchases tomorrow (sent to my hotel) inc a navy TF Harrington so will be a bit like xmas :)

    Thanks for that tip, Welshie! Indeed they are all currently available. I may have to scoop one up, but I'm going to wait until my 9714s arrive - should be early next week. Let us know how you make out with your new items, including that TF Harrington! It goes well with the 714s! -{

    Kind regards,
    Craig

No probs Craig!!! If I get on well with the 714 I might pull the trigger on the Dark Havana version too!

Yes - Harrington, 714s, just need a young Ali MacGraw lol

Now you're talking! The ultimate McQueen accessory - Ali MacGraw (circa "The Getaway" or "Love Story") on your arm!

BTW, here is my pair of the 3028s -

I get compliments on these everywhere I go, and they're often mistaken for the 714s.

    Kind regards,
    Craig

Cool pic - I can see why they mistaken for the 714s on quick glance!!

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Just shows that McQueen got it right - timeless looks.

Not a bad day mail wise !! :007)

I love the 714s (52) and it was great to finally get my hands on the TF Harrington which I purchased ages ago but was still at my shippers! Also relief that it fits superbly (bought one a few years back but to small!!)

I find putting the 714 in the little McQueen pouch a bit awkward fit wise!!

welshboy - Nice acquisition! What did you think about the differences in the fit of the 52 and 55? I'm thinking about selling my 55's for the smaller size. If it's not too much of a hassle, would you mind posting a side-by-side photo?

    McQueen

Both pairs i bought are 52s. I tried 54s in stores and found them too big.

The 52s are prob bordering on the large size for my head (which aint even that small) so would never get away with 54s.

    Will get a pic up

    God… I hope to hell not… :s

Think I'm the only person who wants this to make a comeback :))

It's such an over used item. 'Dark polo neck+silenced gun=spy', by DAD it's a bit silly even though Brosnan looked good in it, it was already overplayed by everyone else...

And everyone will think that until DC wears the nicest TF midnight turtleneck and a brown holster under his jacket harnessing all the cool on the planet and then they will go out of stock everywhere.

That said, this is a snow Bond and they mostly crop up in warm ones for some strange reason, I guess it's cold at night in the Caribbean?

I don't think the world is ready for it again, but if we get it, Craig will own it. I can really see him with a homage to Bullitt look at somepoint, albeit modernised, trimmer fit with less height in the neckmcqueen2.jpgDon't know why I want bond back in one. Weirdly I can't pull it off myself, look like an ostrich trapped in the arm of a jumper :))

I remember having to wear one years ago as School Uniform!
I rather liked them actually. Bond is the man to bring them back into fashion.
