The Sub Thread

Day before yesterday we went to see the first nuclear sub that went under the North Pole! Now a museum in Connecticut, it was active from 1954 to 1979. My Son & I climbed around in it for half an hour, it was so Ice Station Zebra! My cheap camera did not do this awesome historical ship justice...

Then we had lunch at Mystic Pizza. MMMMmmmm, so good. Julia Roberts was nowhere in sight, but lots of pictures of her were... LOL. :D

Any other peeps here ever been on a sub before?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

Awesome. I went on board an active diesel sub a few years ago. They are quite incredible. I am not claustrophobic (that I am aware of!), but being locked in one of those for days/weeks/months on end would be quite a challenge, I think. I believe the modern nuclear ones are rather luxurious by comparison, but even so!

    A question on subs ?

To send or receive signals do subs still
have to surface or send up a buoy ? Or
can they stay in contact under water ?

Looks wonderful! I've never been on one but, being a McGoohan and ISZ fan, I can imagine it was fascinating.

I can almost hear some of that great dialogue:

David Jones: Where were you stationed, Captain, before you were picked up in transit?
    Capt. Leslie Anders: Asia
David Jones: Ah, then you haven't been on the ice before either.
Capt. Leslie Anders: No, Sir. (Pause) But a bullet goes just as fast up here as it does down there.
David Jones: Not quite. An insignificant difference, perhaps, but I think you'll find the operational characteristics of the M-16 indicate that a bullet will decelerate as much as 40 feet per second per second faster in these climate conditions. It's denser air, you know. :))
"How was your lamb?" "Skewered. One sympathises."

great pics Chrisisall ,looks like a fun day out , I have myself been on a Russian sub,not as luxurious as this one,
but those submariners (both sides) must of had nerves of steel ,you think of a sub as this smooth sleek shark like body
but in reality they are covered in dents, bumps ect and you do wonder how they don't sink 8-)
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

I must congratulate you gentlemen on your self restraint. It
Speaks volumes to your character. A thread about submarines
and not one joke about the men who man it the .... Seamen. :v
