Ok,
as hardcore a James Bond fan I am, I'm still amazed by how much 'material' I still haven't covered. From books (Solo and most all the ones published in the 70's and 80's) to games (Legends, Goldeneye Reloaded)...
...and films. (?!)
yes, films. Live and Let Die is one such film I have totally ignored for far too long. I watched this one for the FIRST time about 2 years ago and thought 'nice Jamaica scenes'. I say 'watched' but it was more like glanced at every now and then since i was busy cooking and baking in the kitchen while i was watching it on Spike TV or something. It was a Bond Marathon and it was sandwiched between FRWL and something else. Between all this and all the commercials ini between you can see how i just 'glanced' rather than watched.
Anyhow, i found the blue ray for 5$ at the local music store and said 'im taking this baby home and doing a proper watching once and for all god damn it!!'.
What a great movie!!
Incredibly entertaining!
Yes, it seems VERY dated, how can it not?, but there were so many elements that made this such an enjoyable Bond movie to watch. A quick list -
- Roger Moore was absolutely fantastic. I feel like this is his 'manliest' and most 'Conneryish' Bond out of all his Bonds. Could even Connery pull off the cigar chomping while floating in a giant kite at night scene?? I dont know...
Sir Roger was pushy, assertive, bullyish even throughout the movie. He was confident, funny and looked very much the part in my opinion. Plus, his 'Butter hook!!' line left me dead on the floor with laughter. All this plus he had an incredibly refined air about him, the black outfit in the final act, etc, etc...
-Yaphet Kotto as the villian was cool, distinguished, intelligent and very much a real life villian. His performance was a joy to watch and I think he's now in my top 5 villians. His demise was appropiate, but happened too quick, the struggle should of been extended. His 'fatherly' aspect when engaging Solitaire was almost heartfelt, thus adding a nice layer to his performance.
-Solitaire, in one word, irresistible...like a mango or a juicy fruit of some sort. Incredibly attractive and convincing as a vulnerable victim of curcumstances.
there were so many other aspects, like the San Monique scenes, which were beautiful, Bond's suits (i like brown) TeeHee's butterhook, the crazy voodoo guy at the end. Didn't care for Pepper, thankfully he's just a cameo.
As i said, incredibly entertaining movie and currently watching it yet again. -{

and thought it was amazing, the croc stunt left me open mouthed, was already a fan
Of Roger Moore from the Saint etc. Compared to the crap we had on TV in the early 70s .
LALD was fantastic. -{
lol, the croc scene!
i genuinely was on the edge of my seat wondering 'now how the hell is Bond getting of this one??'
when he did, i too was left dumbfounded!
