Rank the decades

JarvioJarvio EnglandPosts: 4,241MI6 Agent
For me it goes:

1 - The 80's - I am a huge fan of all the 80's films, except for TLD which I think is just ok.
2 - The 70's - LALD is my favourite bond film, so it gets points for that. I'm a fan of TSWLM and DAF. Not a fan of MR.
3 - The 60's - DN ranks high on my list. OHMSS and YOLT in my top half. The rest mid-list to low.
4 - The 10's - Impossible to rank really, as only 1 film, but so far so good.
5 - The 90's - To me, GE is the only decent one here.
6 - The 00's - Worst decade ever. All three films rank low for me.
1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - LTK, 4 - OP, 5 - NTTD, 6 - FYEO, 7 - SF, 8 - DN, 9 - DAF, 10 - TSWLM, 11 - OHMSS, 12 - TMWTGG, 13 - GE, 14 - MR, 15 - TLD, 16 - YOLT, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TWINE, 20 - SP, 21 - TND, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby

Okay Jarvio- I'll give this a shot:

    1. The 60's - Too many of my favorite Connery Classics (FRWL, GF,DN) to not rank this decade as the best. Even the ones I don't like as much (OHMSS and YOLT) are better than average.

    2. The 70's- Basically the really good stuff from Roger (TSWLM and LALD) along with DAF were good enough for me to overlook the ones I really didn't like such as TMWTGG. I am conflicted when it comes to MR. I understand why it's critics are so harsh but I don't think it's nearly as bad as it's reputation.

    3. The 90's- I know Brosnan has his critics, but I liked his Bond. Sure he did some uneven films like DAD and I thought TND was dreadful. With that being said, I also haven't been shy about how much I loved GE and I think that TWINE is probably the most underrated film in the entire Bond series IMO.

    4. The 80's- The 80's were a mixed bag for me personally when it comes to Bond films. I did like FYEO, but that was around the time that Roger started aging. I wasn't really a big fan of OP and I thought AVTAK had all of the elements to be a true Bond classic. It had a GREAT villain, a really good henchman, a solid theme song. It just suffered from two VERY big problems: 1.) Roger was too old to pull it off effectively by that point 2.) Tanya Roberts was one of the worst actresses to ever appear as a Bond Girl. The rest of the decade consisted of Timothy Dalton and I have discussed my feelings about his run as Bond in other threads lol.

    5. The 2000's- Basically Daniel Craig's explosive debut in CR saves this decade for me. I view DAD kind of the same way I view MR. Yes it is ridiculously over the top, but I don't think it's really all that bad. It's just not great either. Craig was so good in CR portraying a more intense, rough around the edges Bond for the new millenium, then all of that intensity seemed to be gone in QOS- which I view as one of the biggest disappointments in the series.

It is hard for me to rank the 2010's decade with only one film on the list so far. However this decade holds great promise after SF- which was a big rebound for Craig and EON.
    1. Goldeneye 2. The Spy Who Loved Me 3. From Russia With Love 4. Goldfinger 5. Casino Royale

The 60s would be my first by far. Connery's my guy, the plots we're fantastic, Bond at its height, the best Bond girls, seriously great villains, some damn good songs. At the films are in my top ten.

The 80s would probably be my second favorite decade. The second half of Moore I think was better than first, and I like the grittyness of the Dalton pictures as they were a welcome change to the Moore era.

The 10s. Skyfalls pretty good, but its like ranking Lazenby, too small a sample size.

The 90s. Two pretty good Bond films.

70s/00s are tied for last. High high, low lows

The 60s - the era of Connery, the real Bond
The 80s - Dalton brought us out of the silliness of the Moore years
The 00s - the series is revitalized by the introduction of Craig as Bond
The 90s - I enjoyed Brosnan's portrayal even if some of the movies weren't up to par
The 70s - believe it or not, I'm not a huge Roger Moore fan! :))

    1. 60s
    2. 70s (coming in second above the other decades because the series was riding the crest of the 60s and still felt fabulously special)
    3. 80s (coming in third above the 00s only because John Barry was still doing some of the scoring, and because LTK is stand-out excellent)
    4. 00s
    5. 90s
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

    1. The 80's - Overall my favorite, most consistent decade of Bond. Plus, I'm becoming more of a LTK fan lately.
    2. The 70's - Got off to a rough start, but TSWLM and MR are my #1 and #2 Bond films overall.
    3. The 90's - Grew up with Brosnan as 007. I now see these 3 as classics.
    4. The 60's - Only Dr. No and Goldfinger hold up well by today's standards.
    5. The 2000's - I like DAD and the first 2 Craig films are decent. I'm not a QoS hater by any means.
    My current 10 favorite:

    1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

Because Brosnan's and Craig's decades started mid decade, I used the first and last year of their movies.

    1.- 1962-1969
    2.-2006-2012 (so far so good)
    3.-1981-1989
    4.-1971-1979
    5.-1995-2002

3-10s So far so good decade
    4-80s Consistently good films decade
    5-70s Funky decade
    6-90s Lost decade.

That's why I wanted to list them by decade (like 1995-2005 is a decade). I'd consider SF together with the 00s.

    1. 1960s - the Bond-mania era. Five out of six films made in the 1960s are among my personal top 5 favourite films. Most of the films in that era were nothing short of brilliant.

    2. 1980s - three great films: For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. Octopussy and A View to a Kill weren't that bad, either. The 1980s, particularly the latter part, saw a return of a more serious tone to Bond films.

3= 2000s - Casino Royale was fantastic. Quantum of Solace was average. Die Another Day was the worst Bond film ever made. To this day, I still don't quite know what to make of the 2000-2010 decade.

3= 1990s - Goldeneye was great, although I did enjoy Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough. While I never particularly warmed to Brosnan as Bond, I thought he did a fine job.

    5. 1970s - it's no secret that as a Fleming purist, I dislike the campiness of the 1970s Bonds. With the exception of Live and Let Die, which I actually did like, I found it difficult to like any other Bond film made in the 1970s.

Now, I have yet to rank the current decade as there has only been one film, but if each of the other films coming up in this decade is at least as good as Skyfall, I would probably rank it outright third. I do find Casino Royale to be better than Skyfall, but the other two films in the 2000s decade drags down its ranking, in my view.

    1. 60's - where it all began.
    2. 80's - a return to form at last.
    3. 90's - just great fun.
    4. 70's - a strange time was had by all.
    5. 00's - the reboot that pleases some endlessly, & others a bit less so.
    6. 01's - not enough info yet.....

60's- Connery/Fleming duo is almost impossible to beat. Even YOLT which strays from the great man is still fantastic even if TB isn't.
80's- Consistent, evolution of the formula to move grittier and a touch darker but still retaining some classic humour.
70's- A mixed bag, one cinematic masterpiece, two damn fun films. Moore is the man.
10's- Skyfall, updated Bond right up to date. Great plot, great action, great actor.
90's- Some missed potential but a return to the espionage of the earlier films.
00's- One very unBondian film, one limp film but CR is a modern classic.
  • Absolutely_CartAbsolutely_Cart NJ/NYC, United StatesPosts: 1,740MI6 Agent

I thought, lets have a look at my top Bond movies and she which decade it featured the most... But my top 6 Bond films literally has one film of every decade, to that didn't help :P

    1. 60's - The strongest decade. Everything is Bondian and original. Full of timeless classics
    2. 80's - No dislike for any of the films, pretty solid decade. All John Glenn's too.
    3. 90's - Underrated decade I would say. GE being the pearl, TND and TWINE both being mediocre but defenitely entertaining
    4. 70's - TSWLM is the absolute pearl here! But they others pail in comparisson
    5. 00's - Casino Royale is in my top 5, but DAD and QoS are among my least favorite ones...

I find it hard to rank 'the 10's' as it's only Skyfall so far and we're only halfway into the decade.

1960s -- No decade equals this one in wit, scope, or entertainment for Bond or his adventures. Connery and Lazenby are masterful.
2000s -- Mostly because Daniel Craig has made Bond interesting again, the films are enjoying a renaissance, even with weak writing.
1970s -- An uneven decade, but the Bond films still have the flavor of globe-trotting epics. Moore makes Bond his own comic hero.
1980s -- Two Bond films -- For Your Eyes Only and The Living Daylights -- are classics in this otherwise pedestrian decade of excess.
1990s -- Tomorrow Never Dies feels like a real Bond film, despite a lame villain. Brosnan plays a cliche low on his natural charm.

My favourite overall film is from the 80's, but my list for best decades is:

60's (The original decade, this one really cannot be beat in my eyes)
    80's (Dalton)
    70's (Some fun stuff)
    2000's (Casino Royale saved it)
    90's (Not bad)
    2010's (Poor...So far)

    1) 60's- love all these films, it started it all and connerys 2nd and 3rd are the best in the series!!!
    2) 80's- great return to form, don't hate any of these film, dalton is what really makes it shine though
    3) 90's- justt an extremely fun decade, grew up on it and was twine was probably one of the most underrated films.
    4) 00's- I enjoy die another day, it's just a fun if not a little OTT film, casino royale saved the franchise, and craig is so brillaint playing a emotionally recked bond. But quantum ranks near the bottom for me.
    5) 10's- only one film, yet so far so brillaint!!!!!!! But what the future wholdes I can't wait!!!!!!!!
    6) 70's- spy Was but the highlight, others rank pretty low, in the bottom 5 for me at least.
    1) connery 2) dalton 3) craig 4) brosnan 5) moore 6) lazenby
