OHMSS Scene Recreation: TV Commercial Production Shots

Cheers All,
This weekend, following a massive effort to get the Aston running, seaworthy, and tarted up for Her Majesty's television debut, filming began for a tv commercial for the Napa Valley Film Festival's Casino Royale Cahrity Event, to be held at the Krug Winery in Napa Valley.
The crew flew to San Francisco form LA to see our car, and we gladly obliged by using roads local to the area, doubling as Napa.
When I was approached on the project, I made sure that the producers received a copy of OHMSS, and my storyboards with iconic scenes that I thought would be not only relevant to the advertisements for the event, but would also be fun to try to recreate some of my favourite OHMSS moments.
Here are some stills taken by the lovely, and patient Amanda (who has recently doubled as Honey Ryder in Jamaica). From Charles Helfenstein's excellent book on the making of OHMSS, we attempted to mirror some of the better stills taken on location for that film too.

So, there were, on a reservoir road in California high summer heat, dressed in black evening wear, with an Aston Martin with black interior, no air conditioning, well, you get the idea.....
This week I put in nearly 25 hours to get the car readied, replacing a leaky needle and seat in one of the recently rebuilt carburettors, curing another fuel leak, fixing a bit of upholstery that came unglued in the heat, bleeding the bleedin brakes...again, and, well, you get the idea....

Her Majesty's DBS performed admirably, only failing to start once after a long period of idling in the hot midday sun.

This event marked the debut of my Lazenby Trilby, a bespoke Baron Hats project that only had arrived last Thursday.
I went with the C-Crown design, and 1/2" ribbon, all based on the original Lock Trilby that I provided. Had the crown shortened by 1/2", and the brim by 1/8" to give a closer proportioned look to the hat worn by GL in the Portugal Guincho scenes.
Other props making their debut included the reworked AR-7 stock and silencer, a master stroke by Q-Branch's own Michael McCluskey of Scotland.
Special thanks to Mike for his Herculean efforts in completing the pieces on time for the shoot.
The Nighthawk glasses and Michelin Guide all made their debut, and were well received by the crew.
In a few months, I will be posting video on YouTube, so stay tuned...

Hope you enjoy our little OHMSS recreation.
Cheers,
Tom

The gleaming DBS in for closeup shots. A jib was used to do some lovely moving shots as well. Sound was taken of the inlet and exhaust.

GL may have been nearly 6'5", but yours truly is nearly 5'6"! Here's the Lazenby Trilby and Driving Glasses, as I leave the air conditioned dressing room, headed for that mountain...
I really could have used a screen correct Magnoli suit that day. I was most uncomfortable in the hired suit...they don't make a size called "fire hydrant!"

Amanda paid homage to the final OHMSS scene with this shot. I know what GL went thru being on a mountain road all day.
I cried too, and the director didn't even have to coax a tear out of me!

It is not that easy to make a graceful exit in and out of an Aston. I applaud GL for making it look so smooth!

My wonderful Amanda and I on a break from filming. The Panama Folder is from Lock....and she also plays a very good game of chess!

Producer Carol gives some last minute script changes, as we had to do over a few scenes as other cars would often stop in the middle of a shot to gawk at the action going on....

I worked very closely with the director, and really enjoyed his generosity in sharing with me his work, and asking for my opinion. My thanks to him for squeezing into the back seat just so we could recreate the GL intro scenes.

Quartermaster Props came thru with this wonderful reworking of the AR-7 and scope. Now with BluRay, we caught so many details, and Michael worked tirelessly to perfect every detail, and have the pieces back to use a week early. My thanks to Scaramangasgoldengun for his craftsmanship.

    Thank you friends!
Now it's on to correct things that broke, lose some weight, and order a film correct Magnoli evening wear ensemble...

Next projects: Recreation of the Palacio Hotel scenes (alas, sans the red Cougar...) I was looking at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, and it looks pretty close to the Palacio in terms of architecture, and flags.
A possible double for that location.
Going to debut my Lazenby cream suit and loafers there....IF we can get permission to film. If not, we sneak in anyway! (gate Crashers...)

Cheers, and thanks for the nice notes,
    Tom

Nice project, Tom! Is that near Hwy 92, just off 280 at the Black Mountain Road exit?

No, it's Portugal, near Guincho Beach...
... you guessed it! About a stone's throw from HB Golf Course. We used different spots on that road, since Filoli were being difficult to film at.
Right off 280...or via El Camino to Crystal Springs Road.
No fog that day...temps in the upper 80's...
    Cheers!

Great effort Tom, know how gruelling that can be, but you and misses' looked fresh throughout.

You should hunt around for a cougar ( just don't tell the wife ! ) - there maybe one in the movie car family, or just someone who also loves the film, and would be happy to join u in the recreation.

    And I can testify that Michael's work can be top notch if given time and luck (everyones personal life gets in the way!) so nice to see you give him a hat tip here. -{

Have to say though, I hate those sunglasses! :o

Hope to cya soon, if we make it up you're way I'll let you know.

    Cheers Paul

    Thanks Paul...
The sunglasses, though a bit dated now, are the correct Nighthawk Driving Glasses that Gl wore in the film..thanks to Andy for locating them!

Yes, i would love to do a Cougar someday. Only trouble is that finding an unmolested one is actually harder than finding a DBS!
There is a Cougar guy in LA who will build us one for around $40-50K, depending upon options.
Amanda and I have spoken with scores of folks at shows, even gone to Good Guys and muscle car shows looking for a good example. Seems that Cougars were fodder for the lowrider set, and many have disappeared that way.
Hell, only 789 Astons were produced, and thousands of Cougars, yet I could get you an Aston tomorrow!
There is a chap w a red convt Camaro who is a customer of mine. I have approached him about doing a recreation scene, maybe w the Camaro parked next tot he DBS, ala the Palacio arrival scene. Since it's a long shot, not too many people (except all of us on AJB) would notice....

The Fairmont in SF may be a good double for the Palacio!

Next, working on the Gucci suitcase to bring it to film seen spec.
Will debut my Magnoli Lazenby Palacio cream suit in Sept.

Let me know when you are popping up here.
    Cheers, Tom
