Goldfinger is still my favorite Bond film, so it wins in my book. I agree with the posts that single out Bond turning Japanese and the loss of Aki as major minuses. I was surprised to see the OP say that the "pacing is racing" because, while I enjoy that phrasing, I disagree. I actually think that the film drags on a bit. The whole turning Japanese/wedding sequence takes way too long and brings the momentum to a halt. Additionally (I know I'm going to catch some guff on this) I even find myself saying "just get on with it" during the massive final sequence. To be fair, the film is photographed beautifully and Tiger is probably top three sidekicks of the entire series.
The wedding sequence is one of the most beautiful in the series and makes the film special in that it took the time to have it. It's one of the few Bond films that truly feels epic and like a great vacation as well.

YOLT is more entertaining and funner on hindsight for a 1960s film, though it has a uneven tone and you can sense the corporate soulessness creeping in. Goldfinger is more innovative and iconic, though more creaky and old fashioned at the same time. Honor Blackman is fantastic and saves the film she's in.
That was taken from Ian Fleming's original book, with Fleming having a pretty aloof bordering on repulsive attitude on women and foreigners. Bond turning Japanese doesn't work and is pretty offensive (but not as offensive as Micky Rooney turning Japanese). But that's part ofwhat is uneven about YOLT, with Tiger Tanaka being this great and likable ally to the Western protagonist (only two decades after WWII) but he gets clumsily and unnecessarily overdubbed. 8-)

I respect Goldfinger more, but I prefer YOLT and got in on DVD.
Also the Mastersons' murders at the hands of Oddjob were definately a blow, with gold painted Masterson the younger being partcularly bizarre, but Aki's death scene was so horribly beautiful and gave YOLT more emotional weight than it deserved.

More thoughts:
Why these two Bond films seem iconic to the general public-
GF is Connery's most lively, amusing and smug performance as Bond IMO. He was great in all his 60's Bonds, but this script & director really let him loose.
YOLT was the biggest a Bond movie would ever get, it kept turning up the volume until we were in over our heads, and I for one loved it.
I remember as a teen working in a local bar and when YOLT was first shown, they
had it on the big screen and it was like a football match. The place was full, and
everyone watching the film. )

Silly moment:
Crushing a golfball by hand/ who's filming the ocean drop that Bond watches?
Curious FX:
Auric's toy plane/laughable lava flow matte.
Did you really say that?:
"I must be dreaming."/"Mr Osato believes in a healthy chest."
That doesn't happen:
Death by paint/a piranhna kill in seconds.
Strange weapon:
Gold bar/couch.
What gave my disguise away?:
Your gold gun, General/your gaijin nose, Japanese fisherman.
