GoldenEye vs. The World is Not Enough

Between Brosnan's first and third Bond movies which do you prefer more and why?

Both have great villains, great settings and plotlines. The background music for both were solid, I thought. Both have a good pace to them. Everything that identifies them as Bond movies are very present in both films.

So it is a tie for me.

What about you? Bond 17 vs 19, which one is better?

Goldeneye for me as well. Never really liked TWINE that much.

I really like TWINE a lot, but the whole Bond vs. anti-Bond thing in GE just wins it for me.

I like TWINE quite a bit, and I think it contains Brosnan's strongest performance as Bond, but I give a slight edge to GE. It was such a thrill to see the franchise re-launched, and I think Pierce did a pretty good job of slipping into the role of 007. Judi as M is a real plus, and Sean Bean provides a formidable and interesting villain.

If only you could combine the two... the slickness and edge of GE, plus the cinematography, action and scale vs Brozzer's looks and perfromance in TWINE, the more plausible and less labrythine narrative, the relative lack of self-referencing...

    Frankly, TWINE...

The whole anti-Bond thing in GE gets very wearisome. I am not a fan of GE...

Yup this was kind of what I was going to write!!!

TWINE is a weird one - I never have any inclination to watch it but when I do I actually quite enjoy it!!! It feels a bit too long for its own good though

TWINE over GE but both are good. TWINE is better on the character motivation front.

Goldeneye every time! The pace, direction and the jeopardy presented by Trevelyan are far superior to TWINE IMO. Though David Arnold's score for TWINE beats the hell out of Eric Serra's anachronistic* entry.

It's a good word, one of many that could be chosen to describe Serra's effort- such.as unfortunate, misguided, inappropriate...

I pick TWINE, it has such a great story that Skyfall copied most of it.

I thought that parts of CR were copied from it too.

People don't like the background music from GoldenEye? I'm kind of surprised by that! Each one seems to fit the scene they are in perfectly. Two pieces really stood out for me. The first one was used when the General and Xenia steal the chopper and when Natalya emails Boris.

The second was used a few times in the movie, but the first time was when the GoldenEye was being stolen from the bunker, in the train when Natalya is on the computer and Bond is trying to cut through the floor and the final time was when Boris twirls the pen grenade, trying to reprogram the GoldenEye.

For the most part the scenery is cold and metalic
Which I think is mirrored by the music. :) Don't
Think it's great music but it suits the film.

It was serviceable overall, and definitely better than FYEO, but still lacking IMO.

I agree re TND (probaby Arnold's best) but would definitely rate TWINE streets ahead of GE- "Only Myself To Blame", which is used instrumentally as Elektra's theme throughout the movie, is a beautiful melody and beats anything Serra wrote for example.

My favourite D Arnold score is QOS. :D although I too
Much prefer the music of TWINE to GE.

Here are the two pieces I was talking about from GoldenEye.

    Stealing the helicopter:

Setting off and stealing the GoldenEye:

I don't know why, but these two have an eerie appeal to them for me. Especially when the second one picks up.

Goldeneye for me. It's individual moments are better and they add up to more than TWINE's do. There's a certain lack of polish which makes the film really atmospheric. I feel Brosnan's other films were too polished. I do like them though, particularly TWINE.

As for the Goldeneye score, it's a strange one. It sounds quite dated now but it works for the film and captures the mood perfectly. It's not one I could listen to on it's own though.

Goldeneye for me too. Although they should have kept the scene they chopped from the start as to how he gets the gate open at the dam, I think Sean Bean is phenomenal. I think it was downhill for Brosnan after that TWINE and TND felt a bit too comic book. I think someone has said this before on here and about Roger Moores period, they graduly get cliche and silly for the point of entertainment as the writters struggle to come up with something fresh, hence a reboot comes its fresh and re-ignites the franchise.

I loved GE's score, had it appeared in any other Bond film it would have been massive disaster. With the exception of the horrible car race music, I think it fits the tone and atmosphere of GE like a glove, far better then anything Barry or Arnold could've come up with.
