Would Fleming's Bond be considered an Alcoholic nowadays?

Going through all of the Fleming Novels and tallying up all of Bonds Alcohol Intake, to modern Readers this would be an extreme Excess nowadays. Would the current drinking Guidelines brand Fleming's Bond as an Alcoholic?

Compared to the alcohol intake of the average Britain these days
Bond /Fleming would be considered a moderate drinker ! :))

Depends on your definition of 'alcoholic', I would say. I don't think he has a drinking 'problem' as such - in the sense that he's not addicted to it, but he does like a stiff drink somewhat frequently. I don't think he's ever been recorded as having a drinking problem, nor a dependence on alcohol. In my book, he's not an alcoholic.

That being said, he's definitely a heavy smoker.

I'm just reading about Bond's alcohol intake in "For Your Eyes Only" by Ben Macintyre and put in terms of quantities, the kinds of drinks consumed and the timeframes, such as Bond's visit to Blades in MR, I would say that Bond was a straight-up alcoholic without any doubt or exceptional circumstances to explain for that kind of consumption.

    :)) , re-reading Christopher Wood's " Spy who loved me " and on the
Plane flying Bond into Cairo he thinks to himself his Doctor had told
Him he was at the highest end of the heavy drinker scale. :)) I'm

But I guess that's how it was at the time Fleming wrote the novels - everyone smoked, and drank more heavily. My parents had a drinks cabinet(which my brother and I shamelessly used to raid, and fill the empties with water :)) ) full of exotic stuff like ancient bottles of Tia Maria, Cointreau and Avocaat (I have no idea why).

Though I'm sure Fleming was at the heavy end of the scale even for those times, and just passed in his vices to Bond.

The article states Bond needed two weeks in hospital following the car crash in CR. I thought the hospitalisation was more to do with having his balls bashed by Le Chiffre! :))

Well, Bonds service does serve wine during lunch in the staff cafeteria.

How many of you can get away with half a carafe of claret during lunch on the work day? :o

Used brains !... Still everyone needs a hobby ! :))

As for Bond being a heavy drinker, I'm amazed at the soaps. Even midweek
When people are at work, there are the characters in the pub drinking ! :))
With any kind of stress, shown to be coped with by Drink . :))
Now that's a great message to be putting out. :))

I remember reading an article on this a long time ago and the result was that though not an actual alcoholic by medical standards, he was borderline (and by that they meant right against that border) where it would only take one or two more drinks a day to push him into being a full blown alcoholic. Given that he smokes like a chimney, it's not surpising. I used to drink a lot more when I smoked (1 - 2 packs a day), though certainly not anywhere near what Bond and Fleming knocked back.

Perhaps. Alcoholism wasn't really seen as a disease in the past, as it is today.

Just a little context, for what it's worth.

Fleming's JB wasn't the gym-loving unstoppable action man he has become but pretty much a desk bound, bored civil servant.

I suspect even these days such people drink more than is "acceptable"...

:)) I wonder if we'd of had the great Bond adventures if Fleming
Hadn't been very, very drunk at the time. :D as I'm sure he'd be
Considered an alcoholic by today's standards . :))

    Most great art is produced by drugs or alcohol sadly from Coleridge's 'Kubla Khan' onwards. :) -{

Alcoholism is not a disease although it is perceived that way by people who need an excuse for not being able to stop drinking.

This probably means alcoholism has hit close to home for you, and that's the case, I'm sorry.
No, it's not a disease like Ebola or arthritis, more akin to a predisposition like obesity or depression IMO.
