Precisely. And for my taste the focus on Japan as the site of the action wasn't overdone at all. It is one of the reasons YOLT has such high entertainment and re-watch value.
Wow, I envy you, that must have been awesome! I always loved MR, even watching it on a crappy pan-scanned VHS.
True, I agree that the different countries, exotic places are key to the Bond formula, books and films. I just think they overdid it in YOLT where IMO they focused too much in the Japan canvas, as opposed to MR where Brazil is featured in the background, yet they don't spend 10 minutes in a capoeira exhibition.
To be honest the locations were a feature of the books ie sunkissed Jamaica, rundown Harlem and exotic Japan. You have it that the locations are part of the scenario as well.
The locations are one of the places you look forward too in a Bond movie...
I think you're missing the point. I completely agree that exotic places are part of the Bond formula. I just think in YOLT they overdid that element. A matter of taste. Others seem to like the Japan wedding, the sumo fights, but IMO in YOLT what should be the Japan background becomes the foreground.
~Oh I get the point. You seem to forget Japan and its culture being part of the story. Isn't there a meeting with Henderson explaining the mysteries of japan. Its the first western film to be shot there. Theres still abit of intrigue there.
And I dont think the sumo fights, wedding are overused. They are just about perfect.
1. For Your Eyes Only 2. The Living Daylights 3 From Russia with Love 4. Casino Royale 5. OHMSS 6. Skyfall
Bottom line for me: In TB was Connery at his peak, but Young had a tiger by the tail trying to deliver an epic Bond while still staying true to the fine Flemingesque roots he himself followed in the first two films.
In YOLT they boldly embraced epic, period.
So while I totally appreciate TB, I enjoy YOLT more for what it purely is (in much the same way I enjoy DN more as well).

If it's any consolation, the difference in enjoyment I experience in viewing the various 60's Connery movies is minimal actually. As Bond said in YOLT, I love 'em all. :007)
And let this be a lesson for you guys. Even the biggest Roger Moore hater (BlackLeiter) and (one of) the biggest Roger Moore lovers (me) can find something they agree on. You Only Live Twice is (in our humble opinion) a very entertaining movie with beautiful locations, great action and a good performance by the second best James Bond )
Both movies are very high on my list as both are visually very expensive movies and you can see it almost all the time.
Drawback with TB is the imo too long underwater battle vs. some too long and partially crappy (the wiggly doors on the Spectre Shuttle) space scenes in YOLT.
Overall I prefer the unique asian locations from a time where Japan was pretty unknown vs. the beatiful locations in Nassau and the better girls.
I have a slight preference for YOLT just because of the amazing volcano set and the beautiful aerial shots.
President of the 'Misty Eyes Club'.
Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!
I just watched TB. I hadn't seen it in a long long time. It holds up better than I could remember. Specially Connery is at his very best. Giving his all in the performance, and looking extremely fit. He carries the movie with confidence and charisma, as the great star he was in 1965.

Good point, my friend. We are a very varied lot, but occasionally there is something about Bond that will bring even polar opposites together. I'm glad to find out that YOLT does that for us! {[] (I'll even overlook the "second best James Bond" jab! ) )
YOLT for me. TB has never ranked highly with me, it's just too slow overall with the underwater scenes. YOLT on the other hand is quite fun, and has the great volcano set and excellent Japan locations. Although I'm not too keen on this version of Blofeld.
