agree , we played it (the gang and I )yesterday ,and we all agreed on the same thing ,great music ,typical Bond ,Smith crap ,
we didn't even bother to listen to it all the way through .Shame really ,because we was all hoping for a belter .Certainly wont be hitting the sport button in the Beemer ,when that comes on the radio .Never going to be a Bond classic (in my opinion )
and after all before you all start shooting at me ,that's what we are here for :D

I like the orchestration but it's lyrically very weak- there's no real strong phrase or image that leaps out at you, the writing's generic. For me, the best Bond songs are very visual, such as A View To A Kill or Goldfinger.

I also feel that Sam Smith's voice is wrong. I don't think it's compulsory to adopt a Bond persona if you're a male singer so Smith could have easily done something else with the song, but instead it seems like he's trying to get in Bond's head and the feminine vocal doesn't match with Craig's Bond. I also feel that the falsetto is unnecessary and makes the song more about himself rather than the film.

ok, guys so its pretty much unanimously god-awful. So we all know our duty, right? We gotta go out across the entire internet and spread out our outrage across everywhere that it is the worst bond song ever, and then Mendez has a month left to get Adele to do a replacement song, throw a butt-load of money at her at whatever's left in that 300 mil budget pot. Call it Spectre, and have it be a dark tone to mirror the ghost logo and death theme, not just a feminine guy complaining about his loneliness. And Use Live and Let Die as a template. After the finished product, I won't mind having trace amounts of W'sOTW's instrumental theme played in bits and pieces of the film as the only remaining remnant of that colossal wreck

AWTD is not a classic, but at least I didn't cringe when I heard it. It would have worked better with just Jack White, or with his band The Dead Weather.

Thanks a bunch...Joss Stone laying across the bonnet of a DB9....sledge hammer on man sausage time! :o

I have to admit that both "I'll take it all" by Joss Stone and "Nobody Loves You" by Kerli are pretty damn awesome songs! The re-edition of Goldeneye is just "meh" because it's nothing new really, but I agree that they're both better than this Sam Smith thing... I wonder if someone from EON is reading this thread and going "oh snap, we f*cked up". I posted the song on my facebook - not one single good word about from my friends! 8-)

This thread is obviously not full of spoilers so I will not spoil anything but I'm slowly starting to think that we're up for Craig's worst outing as James Bond... :/ Remember Quantum of Solace? They had problems with the script, the song was bad because Amy Winehouse was pushed away from the project, there were two car accidents on set in Italy and before they even started shooting there was a screenwriters riot (hence the bad script anyway). And here we are with Spectre, where the script was so awful they had to change it multiple times (that didn't happen with Casino Royale or Skyfall as far as I know), the supposed singer turned down the offer of singing because she's afraid she would screw up so we have a replacement with a crappy song yet again and on top of that there was that huge leak revealing some details of the movie.

I really hope I'm wrong and they will handle this mess with grace but I really, really doubt that. What's worse is that everyone in the cast is saying "expect Skyfall x10" which is the worst thing you can say before the movie premiere - if it turns out to be bad, saying things like that multiplies the failure.

All scripts go through re-writes, and Casino Royale was no exception. Paul Haggis was brought in to rewrite Purvis and Wade's original script. So there's one thing you are wrong about. Who knows if the news about Adele turning the song down are true. It really doesn't make sense, does it? I'm glad Adele didn't do the song again because that would just tell me there's a lack of effort in the song. The only mess is the leak, and that was Sony's problem, not EoN's. You're really just acting like the people who thought Casino Royale was going to be awful because Daniel Craig had blonde hair. I waited until I saw Casino Royale a third time to decide it was awful. ;)

Actually I'm usually not like this :) After Craig was chosen I had no problems with that, being a big Connery fan before CR came out. As for Adele - sure it makes sense, her argument was that it was too much of a risk, she made one great Bond theme song - so for her, as an artists, it would be really, really difficult to top that. Most people think, me included, that "Skyfall" is absolutely brilliant, if she released a second Bond song which would be worse then the first one there would always be that discussion about the fact that she made "Skyfall" great, the second - not so much. So I completely understand her.

With that being said - I read the leaked script - not sure if you did, personally I regret that because there is no surprise for me in store somehow. In my opinion it might turn out wrong. I never said that it absolutely will, but I just don't think it will be as brilliant as "Skyfall" or "CR". Maybe also because I heard what happened to "Fantastic 4" after all those huge script changes, the changes in "Spectre" were not small. I'm not sure if they changed the whole third act in "Casino Royale" during the re-writing.

In conclusion - I'm just afraid. I'm a huge fan, not as wealthy as many guys over here so I can't afford many of the items but Daniel Craig's Bond is actually almost half of my life and it plays a huge role in it, so I'm just afraid that they will mess it up in a way that I will be not interested anymore. Maybe it's funny, I just care about it that much.

Eon. No. Don't do this. It's honestly not a good song. People will laugh in the cinema. What were you thinking?

How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating

Is James Bond a 12 year old emo kid? What the f---.

At LEAST re-write and re-record the falsetto chorus, and then you'll at least have something halfway tolerable.

Well it seems unanimous , Smith has blown his big chance , he proudly boasts that he wrote it in 20 mins ,probably on his mums kitchen table .Well it bloody sounds like it too X-( .I would expect a 20 minuet master piece from say Lennon ,or dare I say it Phill Collins you know real musicians, but Smith ,as I said to agent miles Merveey,a few weeks back ,I don't like Smith or for that matter any one of his class ,including that scruffy one with the ginger hair .And now I hate him even more. As one of the guys said ,play the song at the end of the film ,when everyone is busting for a p*ss trying to get out of the cinema.Dont get me wrong ,I think the musical score is very Bond, worthy of the film .Just dub out Smiths lispy warbling ,and we should be ok .

Agree...ah well. I remember the hate for AWTD, and that's one of my favourite tracks, and one of my favourite movies too...

I don't see the relevance of a bad title song = bad movie.

I love Adele's song, but Skyfall is one of my least favourite Bond movies.

It's just a case of hearing the song in context and watching the film...then it'll be interesting to see what people think.

Well...although under different circumstances with no internet, in 1965 Dion Warwick's Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (which I like) was changed to Tom Jones' Thunderball (which is epic) so perhaps The Writings on the "ahem" Wall may find its way to the closing titles?

Regardless of what one thinks of the song, the reaction has been a disaster. Hardly anybody really likes it, a minority think it's okay and might grow on them, and the vast majority think it's crap. It's already having a negative impact on the film and is going to harm the opening title sequence which is a very important part of the movie.

Positive thought: this is Daniel Kleinman's opportunity to be a real hero.

That would be worse- by admitting that the opening theme isn't right, that casts doubt over the film. Unless they pretend that there was always going to be a second reveal and they really pull it out of the bag (though I still think it would be a low-key ballad), it would be admitting to a failure. Besides, we haven't seen the opening credits or the film so we can't really judge whether it reflects the film's tone accurately.

As well as Smith's vocal tone, I feel that he never takes charge of the song. Even with a quieter theme like You Only Live Twice, Nancy Sinatra sings it with power and makes it haunting. The Writing's On The Wall doesn't feel vulnerable, it feels passive. Even in From Russia With Love, where Matt Monro is enthralled by the woman, at the end of the song he takes charge.
