The song seems better with the video, which is . . . odd.

Have to see what it's like with the titles.

And it's grown on me, which AWTD never did.

And there seems to be a lot there for Newman to work with in the score.

I liked the song when I first heard it, and I still like it now. There are just 3 problems for me - the earth song melody, sam's voice not being suited for bond, and the lyrics not being suited for bond. But as a song in it's own right, I still like it. And it is ten times better than AWTD could ever hope to be.

    I agree completely!

I have to say I didn't like Sam Smith's song that much at all, as I have stated on the day it was released.
But it does indeed grow on you. And I honestly enjoyed the video clip and admittedly I found myself even starting humming (!) along with the song. So I guess I could say I'm almost starting to actually like it a bit more.

Is he crying at the end?! Oh my, how cringeworthy. I still feel they've missed a chance here to get Bassey back one last time. The film is obviously going for the classic early days tone, Spectre is back, the large henchman, the giant sets. It's perfect for Dame Shirley to belt out a classic song once again.

This music video is so so. Nothing particularly interesting apart from the film clips. However those film clips look so stylish and slick it fills me with joy and promise for the film. I reckon we're going to all be rejoicing very very soon.

After now hearing the whole song I have come to like it ...even better than "Skyfall". It also works very well against the images from the film in the video....which is important. I also think it play very well over the opening credits. The only flaw IMO is the falsetto, especially if he is singing from Bond's point of view. If the song had a female singer coming in on those falsetto parts it would work better. I find the orchestration very "Bond" and wouldn't mind having it reflected in the score. Music is very subjective, even more so than liking or not liking a film. This song has been very polarizing amongst the posters on this site....some folks seem to just hate it to the point of anger; almost to the level of the old "Craig's Not Bond" stuff. I'm a bit surprised by this....however I have heard some pretty vicious arguments over music in my day.

I hated it at first. To me, a bond song has to hit you between the ears and send you headlong into the universe of bond, reminding you of how cool and slick james bond is. But after a few more listens I find the song serviceable although still wholly dissapointing. I feel the orchestration saves it. Sam's falsetto and the lyrics just drag down the song. The melody is not bondian either, but the orchestration is so good it allows for moments of bondian feelings that I want to feel from each title song.
A rock anthem is always my preference for a bond theme (AVTAK, TLD, YKMN are my favorites), but this song won't ruin the film for me like Sheryl Crows did in TND.

I loved the song, I loved the video, I'll be loving the movie.
I guess I'm just full of love. :D

    + 1

Freaking amazing! not sure I wanted to see some of those scenes, but even more exited about the movie now that I did.
+1....on a few listens I seem to be cutting out Smiths voice and just concentrating on the lush string orchestration..parts of which reminds me of parts of the OHMSS soundtrack.

    The orchestration is simply fantastic. -{
Also after seeing the film, the song will have
a much stronger emotional context, for the
    listener.

    Its growing on me

With Lea Seydoux in the video I seem to pick up on a romantic theme. Monica Belucci never seems to leave Rome - but Lea Seydoux seems to have a full on romance with Bond. Its not the falsetto which sells this song but the orchestration

Craignotbond? Did you have to mention that awful website? Never has a Bond been put through the mincing machine like Craig...

I still dont care for the song and its the falsetto that ruins it. But I have to admit it works somewhat better with images from the movie, and I actually hope bits of it is used in the soundtrack.
I noticed the scenes where Monica Belucci walks out of the house and towards the swimming pool. The way it is shot, the look on her face and her drinking ..... it looks to like she is going to be executed. That makes sense when we remember the scene from the trailer where the two men behind her are shot.
  • HatThrowingHenchmanHatThrowingHenchman Russia With LovePosts: 1,834MI6 Agent
the question is why she is to be executed if she's only the widdow of a SPECTRE agent ?

I presume (from the trailers) because she sleeps with Bond and prob does a Terri Hatcher (information)

Well seeing as we're now openly giving away details and plot ...... :#
My guess is she's to be killed but luckily Bond puts a stop to that and
    Then beds her.

Yes normally " Blown" is a great thing ;) but not this time !
I'm so excited by what I've seen so far, I'm trying not to join
up too many scenes and clues through guess work. :D

On listening to the fantastic orchestration in WOTW, I wonder if it's going
to be used, throughout the film ?

If I was Thomas Newman I wouldn't bother since he had no involvement with the song. The composer of the score simply must be involved with the song.
