Oh, I think a few are leaving the dark side and coming round to
My opinion. It's a great song, full of emotion, I hope he gets
An Oscar and a Grammy or two for it. -{
"I've been informed that there ARE a couple of QAnon supporters who are fairly regular posters in AJB."
I was wondering given the lush orchestration. If the theme will indeed be
Interwoven through the score ?
My nephew put on CD for me the WOTW by Sam Smith and then there was a version by a woman singer-does anyone know who it is?
Then there's a Bondian slow orchestral music (by Thomas Newman?) titled SPECTRE (2015) which partway along has a phrase that sounds like Thunderball-then some more slow music until it sounds like a slow stepping version of the OHMSS theme.
It sounds good but a bit of a pastiche. Is it the official soundtrack or unofficial?
and when is the Spectre film music soundtrack on sale? With other films I've bought it just before the film was in cinemas.
I'm a big fan of Smith's Bond theme.
One of the best for a long time.
How can people say it's nothing compared to Skyfall? Two completely different styles of music.
and Skyfall is an awful song (and a forgettable movie- I'm hoping for much more from Spectre)
After now hearing the whole song I have come to like it ...even better than "Skyfall". It also works very well against the images from the film in the video....which is important. I also think it play very well over the opening credits. The only flaw IMO is the falsetto, especially if he is singing from Bond's point of view. If the song had a female singer coming in on those falsetto parts it would work better. I find the orchestration very "Bond" and wouldn't mind having it reflected in the score. Music is very subjective, even more so than liking or not liking a film. This song has been very polarizing amongst the posters on this site....some folks seem to just hate it to the point of anger; almost to the level of the old "Craig's Not Bond" stuff. I'm a bit surprised by this....however I have heard some pretty vicious arguments over music in my day.
Actually, hearing the song playing over the visuals makes me like the song more (I didn't hate it in the first place), but also makes me feel that it would work even better as an instrumental. I think Smith is a great singer, but I have to agree with those who find the falsetto annoying in this song. And I could do without the crying at the end of the video. No bueno!
that video bond's actions, the way he walks, acts , his confidence. It contradicts the complaining lyrics, 'how can i breathe, i fell on my face, hit a wall' . It is like night and day to what the singer conveys. If bond was like drinking himself into a depression in the video at least the lyrics would fit what was happening on screen. The song is supposed to make YOU the listener feel like bond , or if you are a girl , to be turned on
Watched the video and tried to listen objectively to the song, but.. it still makes me cringe. Following SF's haunting ballad I feel that the producers should have gone in the direction of a more hard edged muscled theme. I did, however, realize that the POV of the lyrics are not necessarily about Bond. They could be Seydoux's character relating about herself and Bond. Since it comes across as just a generic relationship song, it could be about anyone actually. However, as her character is supposed to have a troubled past, the lyrics seem as though they could be describing her own emotions.
I listened to it a few times on the day it was released and wasn't impressed. I felt it was waaay too slow and waaaay too high-pitched. I decided to let it be for a while and so listened to it again yesterday for the first time since it's release. Alas, it hasn't grown on me. I watched the video a couple of times yesterday and todat and while I don't mind the song particularly - although if commissioned to write a Bond theme it just blows my mind why you wouldn't manage to include the title word in the lyrics at least once - I still find it waaay to slow and Smith's falsetto notes waaay too high-pitched. Speed it up a bit, cut out the high notes, and it's probably passable...oh, and get rid of the tears!
WOTW still sucks for me still as well. If I have to force myself to listen to it, it's not good. Skyfall on the other hand was such a good song that I listened to it over and over again until the movie came out. I do not feel comfortable playing WOTW out loud, whereas Skyfall I was playing it quite loud in my car. This song just doesn't scream BOND at all. Hoping I still get the chills when I listen to it in theatres as I'm sure the theatricals will help it, which is the only thing that can save it. Still mad about this theme because usually that's what pumps me up for the movie, but now I have to rely on past movies and these forums )
Fellow agents...
oh help/advice please..
I've just listened to the theme song to 'Spectre '.
words simply fail me!..
Listening to the song 3 tiimes just to be sure...
I find it nothing short of awful...
we all have memories of our favorite pre-credit sequence followed by a rousing theme song...
Am I missing something?..
It makes a little more sense sung by a girl, who can reach the falsetto notes full voice. However, the biggest failure for me is the lack of a rhythm track. As it is, it just feels unfinished. The orchestral arrangement is good though.
I must learn to completely ignore my own first opinions of any new opening theme the first time I hear it..!
I wasn't at all impressed with Adele's Skyfall but within a week it had grown on me, after two I really liked it and after seeing the film for the third time I loved it!
I'm having a similar experience with Writings on the Wall. It's definitely a grower. Was really disappointed at first, despite my initial optimism on hearing the opening orchestral teaser (which I still think is the best bit btw). But after repeated listens over the last week, I'm really starting to like it and can't wait to hear it over the opening titles in the theatre.
I felt exactly the same about Casino Royale (YKMN). Bloody love that song now and works so well in the film.
Perhaps I'm just too fussy and every time a new song is aired, I immediately compare it to my faves; TSWLM, LALD, OHMSS, YOLT, GF and (although not to everyone's taste) MR.
Anyway, the song (and their singer of choice) has done exactly what the film makers wanted; Reached No.1 for the first time, and created loads of publicity. Arguably, they would take those two things over a classic Bond theme every time.
+1. {[]
Despite all the crap directed at Sam Smith he did what was asked of him.
He gave the producers a #1 hit song ! -{ that's worth millions in publicity
and will help sell cinema tickets.
I'm one of the lucky one who love the song and think it will become a classic.
"I've been informed that there ARE a couple of QAnon supporters who are fairly regular posters in AJB."
Does anyone else think that WOTW sounds a bit like a 'generic Bond theme parody'? To me it sounds like a Bond theme by numbers, wouldn't be surprised to hear it over the titles of a Johnny English film or even Austin Powers....I would say with different lyrics but maybe not! Just hope that next time whoever does the theme at least 'has a go', keep Bond theme elements but with a contemporary edge.
I think almost any artist could have come up with this song, a cut and paste Bond theme.
But could they have had a big enough fan base and be able to fool enough
of us, to have a #1 song ?
Something many talented musicians, song writers and artists have fail to do ?

How many of these Sam Smith fans do you think know the song is for the film Spectre? I have a feeling that it won't draw as many people as Adele's Skyfall did, since the connection was obvious. That's why they used to insist on having a title theme, and "Nobody Does It Better" at least had the title of the film in the lyrics.
Every time the song gets played, Spectre gets a mention. If anyone thinks that's
Not good publicity, I just don't know. I think many films would kill to have a much
Played, hit record to help sell the film ?
Than again what do I know, I'm just a usual, working slob.
Those who dislike the song are now saying that having a #1 hit record, being played
Everywhere on all stations and music programmes, is a BAD thing, it will Not help
Sell the film, it will Not sell more tickets .....infact recording a theme ( it would seem
is a pointless exercise) I wonder why apart from tradition, why the producers even
bother. )
Infact thinking about it, if it's not that important, why are so many getting So worked
Up about it ? )

If the point of the theme song is just to generate publicity, get to number one and get air play, then great job done. I just think there is room still for a bit more creativity within that. It got to number 1 because Sam Smith recorded it, not because it's a good song, or a Bond theme. But it's ticked the box marked publicity so I guess that's fine? if we go down that road too far it'll be a shame I think.
I am very very old, so maybe it's just me!!

Age has nothing to do with it. Only one AJBer was brave enough to say Excrement is Excrement but he phrased it better. Kudos -{

I wonder who did the orchestration?....it is really good and very Bond. Maybe they should get a bash at the next score?

The falsetto still ruins the song.
