To everyone, all of you, all ya'll,,,it's the start of our holiday season and I want to thank you for this discussion board. I don't have many hobbies, and I enjoy coming here occasionally and reading posts from some of the nicest people out there about our common interest, James Bond.

Have a safe and happy holiday season....

    Even though I'm not American and I obviously don't celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you enjoy yourself -{

    Thanksgiving was actually around before President Lincoln made it a holiday. The origins are of course the Pilgrims who came to the New World so they could worship as they wanted to. They had a terrible first winter, starvation was common. Part of the problem lay in that they didn't realize that even though Massachusetts was at the same latitude as northern Spain, it's weather was more like Norway. It was cold. Their first crops died in the field. A native American named Squanto came to their rescue. He had been captured by Englishmen and Spaniards and finally made his way home to Massachusetts. He was a Christian and after meeting the Pilgrims he decided to help them. He showed them how to plant corn, which was not native to Europe. He saved them. They had a huge feast and did in fact invite some local tribes. They actually got along pretty well.

    Many church groups in the colonies had Thanksgiving feasts etc. for years, but Lincoln felt it needed to be a holiday, especially during the terrible strife of our War Between the States.

    It's really a time to reflect on what we have and frankly to be thankful for that. I often help out at my church with food baskets and Christmas presents for the poor...I see people who come in and have nothing, and at least we can help a little.

    My job entails working with homeless veterans, most of whom have chemical abuse problems and legal issues, most are homeless to one degree or another. I could just as easily have been them.

    I need to remind myself that there but for the Grace of God go I. I grew up relatively poor but we had a strong family and we got through it....I'm not a preachy type Catholic, but I think that even non-believers and agnostics need to stop and think about it and if nothing else at least thank their luck.

    Thanksgiving kicks off our holiday season, which of course ends on January 1. I really make an effort to go to Mass more often during this season and the Easter season.

    All I ask is that you don't call it Turkey Day--a name that would send my late mother into paroxysms of rage. So Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
