He is. Specifically in Quantum of Solace. I'm not a big DC fan, but he somehow nailed it in QoS.
...hence the title of this tread. I'd be interested to know specifically how he was, in your opinion.
"...the purposeful slant of his striding figure looked dangerous, as if he was making quickly for something bad that was happening further down the street." -SMERSH on 007 dossier photo, Ch. 6 FRWL.....
1) Sean Connery was first, so defacto has to be the best.
Actually, I've never seen anyone make that argument around here. There is no bigger Connery backer than yours truly, but my feelings about his Bond being the best have nothing to do with him being first. And although I am still not convinced that anyone has done it better, I certainly recognize that there have been other very good Bond actors (Dalton and Craig come to mind).
As for the argument I am most tired of, it has to be that Connery sleep-walks through YOLT. I think he appears to be comfortable and confident in the role, and he did a solid job with the material he was given (which I agree wasn't up to par with the previous three scripts.)

Absolutely. He did a lot with a little, and it turned out a fine film despite a slightly lacking script. And he's not the only Bond actor to do that..... :v
Completely agree with that misconception. Sure Connery had a frustrating off set experience shooting in Japan, but to think a professional would let it effect his on camera performance is a stretch. He certainly aged poorly in those two years but the effort is there. Why would someone who is looking to venture outside of Bond turn in a poor last performance?
That's strange for me to hear. By DAF he did look a bit worse for the wear in some shots, but in YOLT I thought he was still mostly in good fighting, almost TB shape.

I agree. Not only is Connery's performance fine, but he's still looking pretty good in YOLT as well. -{
I'd say 'S' is ambigious and 'SP' is the way to go.
But, as Bond himself said in CR (the novel), "n'enculons pas des mouches" ... "that's a vulgar way of saying 'we won't split hairs'".
The Bond arguement which I am sick to death of is who is the best Actor to have played James Bond? My answer to that is always that I do not care who the actor is, I am actually a fan of the Character of James Bond and not the actor who is playing him but also have to admit that I love all but 2 of the films (the 2 I don't like are OHMSS and Licence To Kill).

Yeah, perhaps there should be a word association test to prove oneself a Bond fan.
