AVTAK vs DAD

Which do you prefer out of the 2 universally hated bond films?

For me it's obviously AVTAK, which I find to be tremendous fun.

Even a 57 year old Moore is more realistic than much of DAD. AVTAK (first complete Bond film I remember watching too, so I'm fond of it).

DAD bc the only thing wrong with it is that it uses too much CGI but I do like watching avtak once in a while :))

Well, A View to a Kill has that awesome Duran Duran song in the opening credits, however, the CGI is the only thing that sucks about Die Another Day aside from the story.

AVTAK any day. members such as Firemass and Jarvio have helped me realise how enjoyable and a lot of fun AVTAK actually is. Its Moore's swansong and sums up why RM is probably my favourite bond.
Its still has its mistakes but I prefer it to TMWTGG.
DAD is a franchise killer, overblown bore fest. Enough said.

Die Another Day. The first half of the film isn't bad at all, and there are moments when it is almost inspired, even if the film as a whole is underwhelming and frivolous. A View to a Kill is fairly insipid all the way through, a mean-spirited, crap version of Goldfinger but without the style and jokes.

The first half of the film is inspired at all? Whats this? Bond stopping his heart? Bond flying in with a surfboard? The tremendous Jinx dialogue? The use of Mad Donna?

The first half of dad sinks the film....and then it gets worse

Die Another Day. First half of the film is pretty good, highlights include the title sequence, Bond's entrance into the Hong Kong hotel, and the sword fight. The second half is appalling, the series nadir. The film is also dogged by appalling dialogue/CGI and pretty poor acting.

A View To A Kill. The finale at the Golden Gate bridge is one of my favourite endings to a Bond film. Max Zorin is one of the great villains, the glee on his face at shooting the mine workers is truly disturbing. A good bunch of supporting characters include May Day and Sir Godfrey Tibbett. Some of the action scenes are spoilt somewhat by things like "Beach Boys" and obvious stunt double/s. As for Stacey Sutton, Fiona Fullerton would have been more appropriate in the role. The script doesn't take into account an ageing Bond.

Whilst not one of the best Bond films, AVTAK is the clear favourite with me.

AVTAK is superior in almost every way. DAD is not a Bond film in my eyes, it is an incompetent and incredibly unfunny pantomime that I would be glad never to watch again. The supreme Barry score and Zorin alone are enough to win this one. Even if is Moore is 100, he does a better job here than Brosnan (although I think the script didn't help PB).

    A View to a Kill.

I'm not a massive fan of that film, but I thought it was more entertaining, at least.

Die Another Day is better left on the shelf gathering dust.

A View to a Kill - For me, it's the weakest Roger Moore Bond entry, but nevertheless a Roger Moore Bond entry. It has a killer theme song and one of the best villains in Max Zorin. Moore is certainly past his prime at this point, and the film is one of the most schizophrenic entries in the whole franchise, but at nine years old it was probably my favourite Bond film. It doesn't hold up at all, but I will always have a soft spot for A View to a Kill.

Die Another Day - Apart from Diamonds Are Forever, it's a true stinker of a Bond movie that more or less deserves its crummy reputation. I like Pierce Brosnan, and the PTS is superb, but the film has zero credibility. Lee Tamahori completely underestimates the successes of the Bond franchise and delivers a cliché-ridden mess of truly abominable CGI and cringeworthy dialogue.

Winner: A View to a Kill.

Perhaps a franchise killer in the sense that the producers believed they had no option other than re-boot the character, take the films in a new direction, and cast a new 007 actor unlike any before him.

The first half is outlandish in parts but no more so than Moore's antics in A View to a Kill. In fact, they're fairly well matched up in silliness and in fantasy, but the initial chase, Bond's release, the sword fight, and various quips are fine -- even the surfing scene is more believable than the snow antics in A View to a Kill. Both are insipid movies, but Die Another Day is not as unwatchable as the Moore film.

I am amazed to see there are a few votes for DAD. :s

DAD really is the low point of the series. I didn't see DAD in the cinema (the only Bond film I never saw on the big screen; wish I could say the same about QOS :p ) and also didn't remember any particularly bad review. It was just a time when I wasn't so interested in Bond although I had liked TWINE. I first saw DAD when I bought the DVD tin box set and was completely surprised how terrible it was. Not only the horrible CGI (and that was almost ten years after the much better work in Jurassic Park!) at the beginning and during the Antonov scenes, but the invisible car is totally embarrassing. Let's say the micro cameras projecting an image on the other side could work from a straight side view (even on the tyres or inside the wheel wells) but never when walking around or hiding behind the car. :# DAD really is a pain to watch, although I like the return of the Aston Martin after the BMW years, and the Korea scenes and the ice lake chase are quite exciting.

AVTAK is a masterpiece in comparison. Not my favourite Moore Bond but Patrick Macnee and Christopher Walken are superb. I also like Grace Jones and Tanya Roberts, I had a crush on her after seeing more of her in The Beastmaster and Sheena. And no, I don't mind her screaming "James!" all the time; in 1985 she could have screamed "James!" at me all night long ... ;%

Moore's age? I saw this as a 15-year-old and never had a problem with Moore aging in the role (or Connery's comeback in NSNA). Hey, Bond's the best man of MI6, has saved the world more than once, and of course when you're the best you survive and get older while the others die young. Of course Bond can't simply retire and enjoy lying under the Florida sun while there are still guys out there trying to start a global thermonuclear war or two. :007)

But that's not to say that I would have liked to see Moore continue until now just because Bond never dies or retires. I would have enjoyed to see Lewis Collins in the 80's, taking over from Moore either before or after OP, and continuing instead of Dalton. ;)

And the obvious stunt doubles? Yes, they are obvious. The driver of the Renault 11 looks more like Gerard Depardieu than Roger Moore. But would he have looked more like Lewis Collins or Timothy Dalton? And no, a younger actor would not have done any of these stunts himself. It would have been the same stunt driver - one of the French stunt unit, maybe even a Renault test driver - who would have done the same stunt for a different actor. So, no improvement there. Compared to the terrible rear-screen projection, present and distracting in every film right from Dr. No and almost as much of a trademark of the Bond films as the gunbarrel, to some terrible CGI work in the last few films, the stunt doubles don't bother me at all.

DAD has some great moments and some terrible moments, it kind of gets worse as it progresses (and Madonna lol)

What about murdering the last gunbarrel that opened a Bond movie (so far) by inserting a CGI bullet? That should be a few negative points for DAD, right?
