You were the not-yet generation and thus had no Bond! :))

    Yup.

I concur, the KGB are the ultimate badies and Gogol is one of the best things about the Moore era. There was certainly room in the AVTAK plot to accommodate two opponents for Bond alongside Zorin but in the end they just got poultry screen time and what screen time they did get made them look like idiots (especially Ivanova and her tickly Tchaikovsky)

As for MI6 again I think just a wasted chance, a pretty damp send of for Moneypenny and everyone in general just looked far too old.

The end scene for me just makes Q look like a perv.

Moore in FYEO: "Put your jacket on, I'll take you out for some ice cream"
Moore in AVTAK: "Come in my van, little girl, there's ice cream inside"

    Pros

    • The interplay between Roger Moore and Patrick Macnee is wonderful
    • The music and theme tune are excellent
    • The fire scenes involving the lift are genuinely scary
    • The scene where Zorin murders his workers is suitably manic
    • Mayday’s remorse at seeing her colleagues is nicely played

    Cons

    • The plot is a tepid rehash of Goldfinger
    • Most of the characters (Zorin, Mayday, Pola Ivanova, Dr Mortner) are clichéd, two-dimensional or faintly ridiculous
    • Roger Moore is visibly too old to play Bond
    • There is no chemistry between Moore and Tanya Roberts
    • The pre-credits sequence is dreadful, with the “California Girls” theme, a motorised rock and a crazy-eyed Moore
    • The portrayal of the French characters (the detective and taxi driver) is atrocious and borderline racist
    • There is very little tension and a rather flabby pace
    • Christopher Walken’s acting talents are wasted

    Pros

Zorin is a brilliant villain played brilliantly by Chris Walken.

Great title song from Duran Duran

John Barry's score (apart from the wailling electric guitars) is teriffic..

    Moneypenny at the races. :))

    Cons

The shot of Klottkoff getting chopped up in the pump is out of place in a Roger Moore film.

I would've liked more scenes between Bond and Tibbett.

The writing for Stacey Sutton is all over the place. She's a smart geologist one scene and in the next scene she's getting kidnapped by Zorin in a slow moving blimp

The emphasis on horse racing doesn't relate to the story.

I thought the old guy who "created" Zorin was some kind of genetecist or something, so he uses the steroids to make the horses win. Plus the horse thing is an "in" for Bond and Tibbet.

He experimented on pregnant women in WW2 in concentration camps. He was Josef Menengle type character.

I really do think that this would have made a great first outing for Dalton.

With a bit of re-writing for his more serious style it would have been a classic, I would have loved to see Dalton's Bond vs Zorin.

It does have a certain fun element with Roger though, even though he is only there half the time. His stunt doubles are on screen the other half (mind you, he was 57).

    I don't know what it is about AVTAK, but for all the hate it gets I adore it -{

Funny thing is that even in HD, I didn't really notice the stunt double. I guess its because I wasn't paying attention too much on that detail. I zoned out during some parts of the movie because they were boring lol

Just keep an eye on any of the action (or even running) scenes, you can clearly see it ain't Roger.

I love it when he falls through the boat roof onto the wedding cake, and gets up totally pristine :)) Only Rog could do that!

When I first watched it, I liked it. Then, for a while, I joined the bandwagon to bash it. Now I'm conflicted in the middle lol. I do enjoy it for sure. I can't necessarily rank it too high. It might still be in the bottom few movies, but it's entertaining. The camp and absurdity is part of why I love the Moore films in generals.

Here's my thoughts on the picture:

    Pros:

    -The PTS. Thrills! Chases! John Barry! "California Girls" - hilarious! Mary Stavin! -{
-Great title song from Duran Duran
    -Parachute/taxi chase in Paris
-Good support from Patrick Macnee as a Bond ally
    -Dolph Lundgren's walk-on appearance
-Bond having a bubble bath with Pola Ivanova :D

    Cons:

    -Storyline is not really attention-grabbing
-Christopher Walken has to be one of the worst Bond villains ever
-Howe's murder, which starts taking the fun out of the film at the point it occurs; but
-It is the shooting massacre of the miners, which definitely seals the film's fate, and makes it an extremely terrible film

    Interesting Observations:

-Tanya Roberts' Stacey Sutton "coming out of the closet" to confront Bond :D :v

-How come May Day, Jenny Flex and Pan Ho were not wearing hard-hats when inside the mine (while Zorin and Scarpine were), when it was clearly and expressly stated that everybody entering into those premises had to have one on ("Rules are rules")?

-Dr. Mortner very clearly fires more than six shots from his revolver in the Golden Gate climax - did Maibaum, Wilson and the Script Supervisor ever bother to do their jobs, before this sequence was to be filmed? :s

    Final Thoughts:

I could go on heaping all sorts of negative comments on this film - its my very least favourite Bond - BUT it does have some good points. For those who haven't seen it before, but just wish to see it to complete their Bond viewing, my advice would be to see it after they have had a good day (DEFINITELY not a bad one).

Dr. Mortner is the old man's name. I keep forgetting.

    Agree with your advice.

On the hard hat thing, I think it's about uniform. The hard hats make the non descript workers look more non descript. Giving MD, JB and MZ hard hats would make them stand out less.

One of those cases where immersion has to be broken for a more satisfying experience.

Indeed, an unhinged yet brilliant villain. Walken is one of the very best actors to take on the Bond villain role.
