I don't know if this image was ever posted, but I found it on the web and wanted to share it. It looks like Connery is in a golfing pose, so I imagine that's the topic he's engaged in with Fleming and Saltzman.

Very interesting pic. I love all of those early Fleming pics on the sets. It shows that he really was keeping an eye on his creation. Had he lived until 1980 I don't think he would have liked the way the franchise evolved in the 70s though.

I also don't think that he would have had much Creative Control over the later Films anyway.

No control whatsoever from the moment he sold the rights. But in the early films he seems to have had a sort of unofficial consultant role

I really wonder if he would have appreciated how over the top it got with Moonraker. Who knows, he might have gone along with the times and appreciated it. But from what I heared before he wasn't even to keen on Dr. No when it was first released, so god knows what he would have thought of Moonraker!

He would have thought they turned the movies into parodies, like having a "secret" agent drive a hovercraft gondola through Venice. It's not wonder that the movies made when he was alive were the closest to the novels.

Interesting to hear that you know what Ian Fleming would have thought had he been alive.....

Fleming once said at the release of Dr No that people who had read the novel would be disappointed with the movie but people who hadn't would enjoy the movie very much.

I'm actually glad Fleming didn't survive past the 60's. Even before he passed, the world he had grown up in was changing drastically along with the rest of the planet. Even though he was still young, he had worn himself out physically (from his vices) and spiritually (from his weak marital life). With what was about to happen with society - the Vietnam war, youth revolution, the change in popular music, drugs and the further deterioration of the UK on the world stage, he would have been depressed by it all. The Thunderball lawsuit gave him a taste of how nasty the filmmaking world could be and it just was another nail in the coffin. Though he may have been able to laugh at how much of a parody his creation was about to become and how the films themselves were about to evolve away from him (though he would have loved OHMSS), I think he would have also been extremely disappointed on the overall direction the series would be taking.

Fleming was a product of his era and his era, I think, ended with him.

Obviously I'm only speculating, sorry I didn't include a speculation disclaimer. But I don't think he would have particularly enjoyed some of the comedy aspects in the 70s/80s Bonds.

Thanks for sharing. Wasn't the filming of GF the event that introduced Connery to golf? I wonder if he's making fun of Fleming in that photo?

As a Bond fan I should be allowed to filter out some of the bad comedy elements and still enjoy the 70s/80s films. I will extend the same courtesy to Fleming purists who must also filter out some badly dated elements of the novels.
