There was some talk of misogyny earlier on and I think the books do a great job explaining and showing us that Bond was a misogynist.

Exactly where did he say he was a misogynist?

I don't think a misogynist makes it known to people that he is one. However, the novels that Fleming writes I think quite clearly show us that Bond IS a misogynist.

But which novel did it explicitly state that he was a misogynist?

In GF, Bond says " there would be the sweet tang of Rape, about the love making"
( might not be GF, but I think it is)
Fleming enjoyed handing out a bit of a spanking, so I guess he transfered that
    On to Bond.

    Agree.

No misogynist will say they're mistreating women. They'll just mistreat women and say "she got what she deserved".

Sorry but I don't like johnnies using the 'flavour of the month' word on Bond.

He's far too complex then that. Was it Tracy he says "good girl" too and he has a sneaky admiration for Domino surviving her torture, wriggling out her cabin, and killing Largo.

In CR, Bond also says something along the lives of why do women get
Involved in the espionage business as they weren't mmentally cut out for it.
    When speaking about Vesper.

In the MR Novel, Fleming describes how the Women working in the Regents Park Headquarters will become 'Married to the Job' if they have been working there for a certain Amount of Time.

That's the problem, I can't remember and she keeps spanking me

Although, I regard Bond's views on women as the same as many men's
Sometimes we love them, sometimes we hate them, and I'm sure women

As always yes you're right Barbel. I was thinking about it and think
Fleming describes it in the saying " a whisper of love, a whisper of hate " ;)

It's the marriage angle that makes FRWL sort of weird. Tania's obviously in love with Bond and seems to really expect to marry him and keeps going on about life in England. Bond, on the other hand doesn't seem to care for her except when he's boinking her. When Grant/Nash tells Bond there's only room for one on the escape route, Bond doesn't protest. So, what's he plan to do? Leave on the train, drugged, in the middle of Yugoslavia travelling on a phoney passport, with SMERSH on her trail?

From Russia with Love is probably the best Bond film -- it may not be the best Bond movie (Goldfinger), the best Bond story (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), or the best Bond actioner (Casino Royale), but it certainly is the most mature and plausible of any of the Bond outings.

    Pros

    Young's direction
    All of the performances
    High production values
    Beautiful scenery
    Sweeping cinematography
    Barry's score, including 007 theme
    Wit instead of jokes
Great clothes, sets, locations, cars, and interiors and exteriors.
    Genuine suspense and adventure
PTS that is more of a "cold opener," as many TV shows of the period had
    Memorable characters
True sense of espionage and mystery in the plot and visuals
    Minimal gadgetry
    Blofeld scenes
    Chess scenes

    Cons

Borrows a bit too much from Hitchcock
Thoughtful script and pace makes it less suitable for casual viewing

    Pros:

    Good acting
    Good overall story
    Good villain(s)
    Train scene

    Cons:

The first half drags a bit
The gypsy camp is unnecessary, if it was cut the story would have tighter pacing and be better overall

I like how the gypsy camp scenes (dinner, girl fight, gun fight) immerse Bond in Istanbul's culture, as opposed to how Skyfall just uses Istanbul as a backdrop for a generic chase. You really fell like you're in Istanbul in From Russia with Love.

    I won't lie. It's a pretty misogynistic culture.

My family is Roma (not “Gypsy.” That is a very offensive term.) From my experience with my family and doing extensive fieldwork ( I have a masters in Ethnography,) Roma men are not more misogynistic than the average Joe having coffee at the local McDonalds. The “Gypsy” fight in FRWL is appalling.

Apologies for any offence caused, Vesper. None was intended. In discussing this scene we're using the terms mentioned historically in the novel which were carried forward into the film. Apologies again.

I am used to historical portrayals of the Roma people as wife beating baby thieves. If you read anything from Jane Austen to Fleming it will feature vignettes of “Gypsies” pick pocketing or attaching women. In scene in FRWL is one of the most vile I have seen it a film. That being said I understand that it is no difference than other very horrendous portrayal of minority groups in other films. In YOLT Bond has yellow face, LALD is basically a blaxploitation film, etc. I am not offended, I just am not pleased when people discuss contemporary Roma culture and morality and their only reference is “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.”
