I put this compilation out just for reference. I don't think Ebert's opinions are any more important than our own, but he's been with the series since the beginning and it's always interesting to see some contemporaries opinions (which are often different than current ones).

I don't follow these reviews much as they are pretty irrelevant to me.

What counts are my own feelings when I see the movie - not other's opinions.

    I agree.

However, I think there is a difference between letting reviews complement your opinions and letting them mold your opinions.

    Same with me.

For those of you who are not aware. Barry Norman presented a film review TV programme on the BBC for many years. I felt he was upfront, honest, and often amusing. He never took himself too seriously either, famously appearing in a Morecambe & Wise musical comedy sketch, along with other BBC presenters/newsreaders.

Any views on Mark Kermode ?
I like him and agreed with many of his views on films.
I guess we basically like reviewers who agree with our
    Opinions. :))

Oh I disagreed with Barry Norman. I didn't like it but he reviewed "Diabolique" as "Diabolical"

Oh it was the way he said it.

    Heres his review of Moonraker

Ebert is more on target than off in his reviews. I think his assessment of Your Only Live Twice is too harsh, but then Ebert often seemed challenged by excess and didn't seem to get it unless it was comedy. His reviews often contain errors, too -- the rumor is he did this on purpose to root out plagiarizers. He actually was on his way to earning a Ph.D. when he stopped and became a film reviewer.

Off topic, but now that you mention him, do you guys know where to find a magnificent Barry Norman TV series on Hollywood? I remember watching it many many years ago. Probably the 80s.

Unfortunately, I do not know where to find the complete series. I imagine it would be difficult to discover given the series is over thirty years old. Had a quick look on the net and discovered a hardback and paperback copy are available to buy at Amazon. Also came across a couple of full episodes on You Tube. A longer search will likely provide more.

I agree on both counts. I really liked Ebert and I have written in this forum before about my brief encounter with him in the 1980s.

Any views on Mark Kermode ?

He seems fair and knowledgeable, and a good reviewer.

Ebert's reviews are basically him just talking to reader. Purely his opinions and his expectations. He doesn't try to be pretentious or glib. It's basically like an average guy (with a great passion for movies) just telling you what they think.

And in many respects that's why he was a good reviewer.

Kermode is my personal favourite film critic. I always pay attention to his opinion of films because 90% of the time they are similar to my own. I think that is very useful, when you find a film critic with very similar taste to your own it gives you a good indication of what films you are likely to enjoy.

I enjoy reading/watching/listening to film criticism in general, whether I agree with the reviewer or not. It is always interesting to see how different people respond to the same film. I have always been a fan of Ebert because he always seemed like just another bloke who loves movies, and if his opinion differed from mine that was okay, I nonetheless enjoyed seeing where he was coming from.
