That's what I said, they took place weeks apart in the same year. But the books were published in 1961 for TB and 1962 for TSWLM. So you can't go by publication dates. YOLT obituray is as close as you'll get to working out Bond's age according to Fleming. He'll be 91 this year
There is a school of thought among those that try make sense of any of this that while TB is defo dated 1959, TSWLM takes place in the first few weeks of the period covered by OHMSS, autumn 1961... -{
If TB took place in 59 then TSWLM can't be as late as Autumn 61. In TSWLM, Bond clearly says that he was working on the Thunderball case less than a year ago and he is in Canada mopping up a few loose ends, so TSWLM would at least have to be set in 1959 to early/mid 1960 as Thunderball took place in June 1959.
Few observations for what its worth (and I don't necessarily subscribe to the 61 TWSLM theory):
TB was June 59 - TSWLM takes place in autumn, lets say four month's later; would anyone - inc JB say - that the TB case was "less than a year ago"? No, he'd say a few months ago...
I think you can date Vivienne's history to 60 or 61.
Finally, who was John Kennedy in 1959? No one.
It's all contradictory IF bollocks, not worth worrying about. But I can't see TSWLM taking place as close to TB as you suggest -{

I agree about it being balls, but that line is in TSWLM book. He actually says when talking to Vivienne 'less than a year ago there was this case of the stolen atomic bombs. It was called operation Thunderball, remember?'. It's not me that suggests it did, it was Fleming. You can't blame me for his inconsistencies )

I've read on t'Net one theory round that statement that says as OPERATION THUNDERBALL of 1959 would obviously have been covered by a D Notice, JB could have told Viv that it took place anytime as she wouldn't really know a thing about it. As JB's trying to get into her knickers by showing off, and Viv is quite dozy in agreeing she heard of it, it sort of works...
Things that are done to make sense of what IF himself didn't give a stuff about -{
There is a very well researched book by John Griswold, that will answer questions about the timing of Bond's adventures. Of course it does not attempt to reconcile the Fleming thrillers with the later crap by other authors.
Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming's James Bond Stories
Mr. Griswold determined that TSWLM episode with Bond took place in October 1961. Thunderball was May to June of 1959.

Doesn't Fleming nail down the DOB as 1924 in YOLT in Bond's obituary published in the Times?
It's implied, but not stated directly.
