OT: Kingsman - Exclusive Mr Porter Collection, what if James Bond..

Kind of slightly off topic but I guess this is the clothes section so appropriate place to put it as I thought it was quite interesting.

Mr Porter Online has just put on sale all the clothes for the upcoming Spy Movie "The Kingsman" which includes the Suits, Coats, Shirts, Trousers, Jumpers, Cardigans, Ties, Shirt Studs, Cufflinks, Shoes, Boots, Slippers, Dressing Gown, Pyjamas, Wallets, Glasses, Sunglasses, Umbrella, Briefcases, Luggage etc all in one exclusive collection,

http://www.mrporter.com/mens/designers/kingsman

I thought it was a pretty impressive concept using all British designers and watchmakers such as Turnbull and Asser, Drake, George Cleverly. Bremont etc and putting the lot on sale to the public

Anyhow had me thinking what it would be like if Bond did the same thing, would be very cool indeed! However I guess a lot of the fun is in the chase and identifying such items so maybe not? What ya think??

Not seen the trailer for the Kingsman yet but hear pre-release reviews are very good and the hype is starting to build up - isn't it supposed to be a bit on the lighter spoofy side of the spy genre (guessing here, just the impression I got)

Bremont is a british label - nothing more.

Their involvement devaluates the entire project imo.

Haha i thought you would pickup on the mention of Bremont :D

Think I read somewhere that 70% of their sales was the USA market so I guess their Marketing blurb is working over there

This is a line of clothes inspired by Kingsman and developed with the Kingsman costume design, but not necessarily all of the clothes are what was worn in the film.

Here are the watches in the film from Bremont

The marketing blurb is a bit suspect to say the least:
Kingsman is first and foremost British, which made Bremont watches the perfect fit. Their links to special forces around the world make them ideal for the modern spy" says director Mr Matthew Vaughn

    Links to special forces?????

Ah ok - sorry I presumed all of this was in the film.

Some of the pieces look quite nice! I like those boots!

Just got the same email. Beautiful items and the film looks like fun too - here's the first official trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4NCribDx4U.

I'd love to see something like this done with a Bond film. I agree that the hunt is half the fun and there's a personal reward in owning something that isn't easy to find, but I would love a commercial tie-in like this. Obviously Mr Porter wouldn't do it twice in one year, but if the Kingsman link is a success, perhaps we'll see it in a future Bond film (although it obviously couldn't be Tom Ford). That said, Banana Republic did a similar tie-in with Mad Men a few years ago and judging by the amount of stuff on cheap sell-off at the end of the season, I don't think it was a huge success!

They certainly have not compromised - some pricey PJs etc

I thought it was a cool concept though and maybe Bond has missed a trick here with the all British Tag going on here.

Im def intrigued by this film - I think I will even avoid the trailer and give it a look on release

Interestingly enough, the suits are fully cnavassed and made in the UK. Any ideas on how the maker could be?

    Chester Barrie?

    Chester Barrie?

Chester Barrie is now only a brand and not a maker. The factory was sold and later closed last decade. Cheshire Bespoke is the successor to Chester Barrie and the only place these suits could possibly be made.

Seems the great British Brands are fighing back! I kind of like the idea and Bond used Brands do the same in their own right (look at Sunspel, T&A, Barbour and OB etc all still thriving off the Bond connection why not bring them all together?)

But that said this is a cute move after seeing teh railer n TV the other day even my kids want to go see the film - so maybe my son will be dressing in the style of a Kingsman no bad thing (espcially funny when he think my Bond style dated!)

I think Bond lost something when his tailor moved away from the UK - he is a British Brand, British Naval Officer (and Gentleman) residing in London and was served well by those in Savile Row - but times change I guess.

Still its something to go see until the Spectre comes out in October - I am sure comparisons will be drawn by some.

    Cheers :007)

Well, the shoes in the movie are C&J, we know that for sure.

There's a funny glitch on the Canadian Mr. Porter website, where the burgundy Drake's grenadine is selling for $85 (vs. $195 on the US site).

I got hit with an ad from Esquire today. It's an interesting marketing concept. That said, I'm not a huge fan of double breasted suits -- The fit has to be spot on and they're not very forgiving. There are a couple of single breasted items, but they look more like country retreat suits and not office wear. Still a cool concept, I'd love to see a one stop Bond shop at some point.

I believe CJ do feature but if you watch the small clip of the wardrobe with the clothes and armoury (Colin Firth) the shoes are labelled George Cleverly

What Bremont have done is unacceptable in terms of trying to give their watches a legit background history.

Pulled the trigger on two key pieces from the film, half because I was intrigued with the marketing aspect around this movie and Mr Porter, and half because I wanted some quality items. I am sorry to say I will be returning both. I have heard the movie is good, though maybe geared for younger folks (that's me!) but the reality is these items fall short of quality expectations I would expect from brands and prices integrated for this campaign. The umbrella was just OK, but the Kingsman details seemed shoddily applied. The glasses came up very short against some other high end ones I own...back they go.

Dissapointed but at least their return policy makes it easy to rectify the situation....ah well, more money for Bond....

The shoes are a strange story: Crockett & Jones claims to have supplied the film with their Coniston in Tan Scotch, and it looks like the shoes are used, but looking at the boots in the film (also can be spotted in the trailer) they don't particularly look like Scotch leather to me (but could be). They definitely don't look like the Cleverley's, those are similar, but not the same as in the film I think.

    image009.jpg

I have the Regimental Tie (navy, with red and white stripes) and that tie is also not exactly as in the film, where the stripes in the film are much more bright/strong coloured and clean, instead of the knitted look of the tie on Mr Porter. Shame as the tie can be seen throughout the film worn by the main characters, and is similar to Bond's tie in LALD (New York).

The glasses and umbrella do have cool features in the film, so I like the gadget aspect of it, but the prices are a bit steep (although the brands that make the glasses and umbrella, Swaine Adeney Brigg and Cutler & Gross are usually not cheap anyway).

    Hello Mantis / Remmert

Ive also bought a few things from the collection, they have yet to arrive so I'm now intrigued to see the quality however like yourself (Mantis) I was fully aware of Mr Porters superb return policy so it will not be the end of the world if I'm disappointed and return some goods.

I purchased one Regimental Tie and like Remmert also noticed it is not SA (also noticed the same with the Pink version that Michael Caine wears) however do actually prefer the knitted look.

I also purchased the Sunglasses (so dont have high hopes after your experience), Deakin & Francis Crest Cufflinks (I believe these are in the film as shown in the bunker / wardrobe but could not quite make out if SA with same logo / shield) and at the last min chucked the silk Drakes white pocket square into my basket since I required one for a wedding.

I've got a couple of Brigg umbrellas in oak and hickory and that certainly isn't the same quality. The Kingsman umbrella is around £35/£40 cheaper than their standard umbrella range, which says something, especially given the added appeal of being used in a film and branded as such. Seems a few corners have been cut to bring the product in at a lower price point.

The handle of the regularly umbrella is far more refined...

    And the Kingsman....

Asp, you nailed it....I also have a Brigg and this just seemed more mass produced or perhaps a little less studied as far as quality (if that makes sense)...the glasses were OK, but again the details and feel were not as refined as I had hoped....shame.

Glad you posted, I nearly bought one myself. Cheers DZ.

Im hope the designers mentioned so far skimping on quality are in the minority and your choice from the collection has been a bit unlucky in this respect. The collection did look great in the pics so its a bit of a shame really!

Surely people like T&A will not be skimping on quality with their high standards and reputation. Ive never purchased / not too familiar with Cutler & Gross etc so not sure what to expect. Persols are prob my benchmark for eyewear as I'm not impressed with TF eyewear for the price.

PS - is the Tux shirt similar to T&A Casino Royale? On my phone at the moment so my eyes are struggling!

The Kingsman cardy looks a bit like the one that Lazenby wore. I've been chasing one for ages but this might be a bit outside my credit limit.

Brooks Bros. did a good one with "The Great Gatsby" as well... although I'm not really a fan of pink linen suits.
