Hugh Jackman (was he ever "in the running"?)

Hugh Jackman has said he was approached but turned down the role because he thought it would box him in too much, his instinct was to keep as many doors open as possible.

I've always thought "Van Helsing" was Jackman's dry run at Bond- there's an M scene, a Q scene, the leading lady greets him with "Your reputation precedes you, Mr Van Helsing", etc etc.

Gerard Butler was my preferred choice to replace Pierce.

Ian Ogilvy - though that would have been too much following Moore yet again.

Finally, Sam Neil. I can see now that Neil wouldn't have been great as Bond but I love him as an actor.

Not as Bond but I did mention his as a possible smooth, suave villain. ;)

It's a shame we only caught a few glimpses of him (as Bond-esque) in TSWLM.

He was screen tested at one point wasn't he? A very imposing character.

Michael Billington was screen tested. You can read about his Bond experiences in his own words by clicking on the links below. Page 2 includes pics of Billington as he would have looked as 007.

I belive Billington was Roger Moore's "understudy" as James Bond. If Moore had broken a leg colse to a filming period Bilington would have gotten a call .....
When Moore threathend to leave (and he did a few times) Billington would be screentested again and if had gone through with it he would be a good candidate.

Thanks for posting MooreThan. Interesting reading. Sounds like he had quite a connection with the series behind the scenes for a long time. I think he could have been good.
