Barbour Commander Jacket sizing question

hthomashthomas Philadelphia, PAPosts: 833MI6 Agent
Hey guys, How is the sizing for the Commander jacket? I usually wear a small. Chest is 36" I was told I would need a Medium in the Commander however. Is this accurate?

I wear a small in the Billy Reid peacoat if that helps any.

I've had the Commander jacket for some time now (from Aspecto) mine is a XXL and I'm a 47" chest. The fit, (as per all Heritage line jackets), has a very small tolerance in the chest ( zero to 1 inch) so is supposed to be fitted rather than loose as with other Barbour jackets. The jacket fits me as it should, more like a sports jacket than a big waxed jacket under which you would wear many layers.
Barbour recommend getting your 'normal' size if you want the fit to be as per the design of the line. Hope this helps.

I have the original one in Large, I'm a 40 chest - fits really well

    Hi hthomas,

I usually wear S, too (Hight =5 11"; Chest = 36). I own the Billy Reid peacoat in S, the John Smedley sweater in S, the N. Peal Skyfall sweater even in XS etc. the Canada Goose Lodge Hoody in S, but bought the Barbour To Ki To beacon heritage sports jacket as well as the Commander Jacket in Medium.

    Hope this helps.

I should have also mentioned that it is the weird design of the armholes which made me sizing up from "S" to "M" (With the "S", I just wasn't able to move my arms around).

Thanks for the info. Is it still quite fitted on you with the Medium?

Yes, but of course not that much as with the "S" - I simply cannot recommend small, because of the crazy armhole design.

Yes, but of course not that much as with the "S" - I simply cannot recommend small, because of the crazy armhole design.

The 'crazy armhole design' is because the high armholes make the cut (and fit) like a slim fit sports jacket not the usual Barbour cut as per their other ranges which allows for layering underneath.
Think of this as a sports jacket and you will be pleased with the fit and style of the jacket, plus it's waterproof :D

There has been a huge amount of difference of opinion regarding the fit of this jacket...

I'm 5'9", 165 pounds with a 42" chest and 32" waist and I took a small. Some members here didn't believe that it would fit me until I posted pictures. I tried on a medium, but the difference in armholes was slight, and while the shoulders were a bit better everywhere else the jacket was far too loose.

Of course, some people like their clothes to fit loose, some people like snug. YMMV...

I wear it with a sweatshirt or thin sweater underneath and while it's a tiny bit more snug than I would like, it isn't intolerable. as well, it has loosened up since I bought it.

I tried on a small BR peacoat, and that fit me very well.

Follow the advice given on here! Plus I'd check the Barbour site for their advice as well :)

I just measured my BR peacoat size small to compare to a medium Commander Jacket
    Here is what I got.

    Armpit to armpit - BR - 20 Barbour - 21
    Sleeve Length - BR - 25.5 Barbour 26.5
Shoulder to Shoulder - Both 17
Back Length - BR 28(cause its cut high) Barbour - 29

I also wear a 38R in a suit or blazer jacket.

I know a lot of people said a small but I feel like the medium is where I should go. I still want a slim fit however. What do you all think?

If you need a 38R jacket then definitely the Medium. But if you are really a 36 chest, you need a Small. I'm a 38/40 inch chest 6ft 2 ins tall and the Medium is a screen accurate fit for me. The Large is still a nice fit, but I can wear more layers underneath it and it's not a SA fit.

I must have measured my chest wrong sorry! I wear a 38R in a blazer or suit jacket. I will go with that and with your advice then on the medium. Thank you!

Then a Medium should fit you perfectly. Just get rid of the three buttons...

Very nice ASP with all the modifications. Did taking the hood zip off leave any marks your pictures don't look like it

I had my To Ki To similarly "accurized" - had the tailor remove the zipper and it's pretty seamless. One rewaxing later and the stitch marks where the extra buttons were aren't even visible any more.

Is there a diagram showing what needs to be altered ?

None at all. Dead easy to do yourself. Removing the buttons is childs play, but you do need to apply wax to the area and tease the material to spread the fibres again.

I'm really tempted to alter mine as I never wear the hood, but not 100% sure what else I need to alter to make it SA?

The two buttons on the collar need to come off, and the one that connects the tab on the opposite side it's fixed.

Should look like this when you're finished...

No, I forgot the original had more for the hood attachments. Those two below the tab need removing too.

Excellent thanks and one final question (sorry for the barrage) how did you remove the zip? it looks harder now I've looked at it. Does the cover bit of material have to be re-sticted on ??
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,535MI6 Agent
Get right in there with some sharp and slim scissors and cut slowly. Then slowly pluck any strands free with tweezers. It will be just as neat as a tailor doing it as it's so simple. The material the zip is attached too cuts like silk, you don't even have to snip the scissors, just run them along. The hardest parts are the thicker end pieces, but still no drama.

I had a few minutes to kill here with Photoshop. Here's your pic, Thomo, with "X's" to show what buttons to remove, and the zipper of course.
