I agree with that. To me TND is a poor-job of a 60s style Bond film (TB/YOLT). Poor not in its execution, but I just feel that one cannot replicate those films anymore.
TND knocks the socks off both those 60s' films! If anything TND is a fine job of recreating the late 70's Lewis Gilbert Bonds, but updating it to 90's action standards.

I've seen that one pretty recently, and while I really enjoy the first act, it feels like all the air and all the narrative momentum goes right out of it once Bond leaves Hamburg.
I agree with that. To me TND is a poor-job of a 60s style Bond film (TB/YOLT). Poor not in its execution, but I just feel that one cannot replicate those films anymore. TND to me also feels and looks a bit dated, the 90s style (in particular some of the fashion at the CMG launch) is not as timeless as it could be.
I find the film reminiscent of YOLT, in which it does a few things well, but at the end - lacks a bit of soul and fine touch.
TND was put together by commitee..
1. For Your Eyes Only 2. The Living Daylights 3 From Russia with Love 4. Casino Royale 5. OHMSS 6. Skyfall
In talking to a few non-Bond fans, they find this film particularly memorable. Including the torture scene, Christmas Jones, Robert Carlyle and "the oil plot", they tend to be able to recall this film greater than elements within TND...
Digging the love for TWINE in this thread. In my top 8 or so at the moment, but I've always loved it...
And it must have done something right, given that it's virtually a blueprint for Skyfall!
Film: Tomorrow Never Dies | Girl: Teresa di Vicenzo | Villain: Max Zorin | Car: Aston Martin Volante | Novel: You Only Live Twice | Bond: Sir Sean Connery
Pros:
1.the Plot, since SF copied a lot of it
2.Denise Richards, one of the hottest Bond girls
3.the PTS in the Bilbao office, one of my absolute favorite Bond scenes.
Cons:
1. kind of a lukewarm film overall, doesn't have the energy or fun of TNDs.

Love the PTS, it's amongst the very best

Post Cold War feeling
Elektra, Christmas, Molly and Cigar Girl
Renard
Zukovsky
Music - score and title song
Storyline
The relationship between Elektra and Renard is fascinating
Cons:
Getting rid of the line: "That daddy's little girl is insane"

So my Bond marathon continues with The World Is Not Enough. I have to say I did enjoy watching this on blu ray for the first time in a couple of years.
The pre title sequence is fantastic and in my opinion the joint best of the entire series. I love the scene with the banker and an unknown assassin protecting Bond very reminiscent of Red Grant in FRWL. Then comes the jump out of the window, then onto MI6 HQ on the Thames the killing of King followed by the speedboat chase.
I actually watched the extended chase in the special features and I do wish they would do a "Directors Cut" version at some stage.
As others have said there is quite a complex plot for a Bond movie, and Electra is utterly georgeous maybe even the pretties Bond girl of the series.
The Q departure scene is awesome, however having Basil Fawlty as R didn't work for me. I was waiting for him to do a "Ministry of silly walks" anytime soon.
I've always liked Robert Carlisle as an actor I think he's fantastic but feel he is under used here. The film does flow quite well but I think it does drag a wee bit in the middle. I liked the return of Zukovsky and I thought the whole Nucleur sub plot was good.
Denise Richard's character is totally unbelievable, and there is some cringeworthy dialogue between her and Bond.
The torture scene is great what a way to go with that gorgeous woman sat astride your lap.
Bond shows his brutal side when he kills her "in cold blood"
As with every single underwater scene in all of the series I have a beef with. So I will just move on, but say when Bond is waiting for the button to be pressed for the airlock to be cleared, I do have great sympathy with him.
Overall a good Bond film in my opinion Brosnan's best. I did enjoy watching it.
Brosnan's acting and intensity is really on show in the banker's office scene in the PTS - but what's hilarious, and highly admirable is how he's acting so convincingly through some hilarious dialogue:
"At the current rate of exchange, minus the fees and certain......unforeseeable expenses."
"Would you like to check my figures?" "I'm sure they're perfectly rounded."
"Looking at our present situation......as a banker, I'd have to say......that the numbers are not on your side."
"Perhaps you failed to take into account......my hidden assets."
"You've had a small reversal of fortune."
"Let's count to three. You can do that, can't you?"
While it all appears and sounds in this context so silly, IMO it's acted so well that you almost don't notice it...lending itself to actually be well written.

I actually really like that dialogue even if it is basically just multiple one liners. Totally agree though about the acting. Brosnan sells scenes that would otherwise just seem so daft.
....and the best he ever managed was a sermon on the mount.
Denise Richard's character is totally unbelievable,
I sense a deep-seated prejudice against Denise Richards as a scientist simply because she is Denise Richards.
Personally, I don't see why it's such a big deal. Lois Chiles is an astronaut, Stacy is a geologist, Denise is a nuclear physicist.
Great that the Bond series has all these gorgeous women in high-level occupations. No reason to be sexist about it and say it's unbelievable for a pretty girl to also be smart.
My current 10 favorite:
1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

Dr Jones acts more immature than the others, but though it makes me dislike her it's still possible for her to be a nuclear physicist. My girlfriend has an occupation that involves an incredible amount of intelligence, and yet she is just as good looking and as fashionable as the best of the Bond girls too.

My GF gets that I find Christmas Jones immensely attractive (I think shes the hottest Bond girl) but finds her implausible based on her acting and lines - more than the profession she's been tasked with.
"Someone's tampered with the bomb!" is a pretty good example.

Basically SF in the 90s. But actully entertaining and Bondian.
Pros:
.That PTS.
.Very interesting plot. Little hard to follow at times.
.Good theme and score.
.The real MI6 interiors are used.
.Good use of Judi Dench.
.Brozza's second best performance.
.Elektra King. Sophie Marceu defines sultry.
.Dr Jones is great to look at. Just turn the volume down.
.Takes elements from the original GE script. Helicopter saws/silo sequence.
.A villain that feels no pain is interesting.
.The first half up until the Kazakhstan sequence is excellent.
.Bonds smile when he shoots Davidov.
.Zukovsky.
.Q's exit.
.Cleese is ok. He's great in DAD.
Cons:
.Some of Denise Richards dialogue.
.The scene where Broz confronts Elektra about Renard. Corny dialogue and acting.
."I take pleasure in great beauty". ?:)
.Bond caressing Elektras body. Bond just walking away would've been colder and cooler.
.Renard is killed too quickly.
.The finale isn't that exciting.
I watched TWINE for the first time in years and was surprised I enjoyed it.
The whole stockholme syndrome story and twisted nature of Elektra was really appealing to me as was the constant twisting plot. The film's strength is Elektra's twisted persona so it's no surprise that once Bond kills her, the film loses its power and the climax drags.
Brosnan gives his best performance as Bond and the whole cast is great. People often complain about Denise Richards' believability as a nuclear physicist. I agree with this in her early scenes, but the further into the film we get, the more believable she becomes. But definitely the weakest actor in the cast. Sophee Marcea is brilliant as Elektra and Robert Carlyle is an interesting villain but is underused and quite weak in the end given he was Elektra's pawn all along.
Arnold's score is superb and much better than his effort in TND. Garbage's title song is one of the best in the series and the PTS is the most exciting in the whole series.
TWINE used to be 22nd on my list but after this viewing, I've reranked it 12th.
