Not best directed, produced, or even your favourite. Best written. Novel adaption or original story.

I nominate Dr. No. While not my favourite film, I love the writing; the dinner dialogue in particular has never been topped, not even by the Goldfinger exchange on the table IMHO.

    I'd say From Russia with Love, which enhances the espionage aspects of the novel by having a third party play the USSR and UK against each other (as opposed to making the Russkies the villains) and adding fascinating material like the stealing of the LEKTOR from the embassy. In a lot of ways, it actually improves upon an already good novel.

    Goldfinger also improves upon Fleming's novel, and the script is superbly witty, the wit is on a par with Casablanca.

    OHMSS might be a contender, but I personally feel the director fluffed a lot of it, what with the casting and some of the subtexts missed imo. Only sometimes do I pick up on what the writer was intending.

    The tension generated by the excellent scripts in both OHMSS and Casino Royale get my vote. The scenes with Blofeld in the former and Le Chiffre in the Casino, and Vesper on the train, in the latter are excellent. The script writers also knew when to avoid dialogue and just show the scene, especially the wheelhouse scene in OHMSS which IMO is the best nail-biter of the series.

    The Skyfall script was also brilliant IMO too, especially the banter between M and Bond:
    Bond: I read your obituary of me.
    M: what did you think?
    Bond: Appalling.
    M: I did call you an exemplar of British fortitude.
    Bond: That bit was alright.

    CR has to be one of the best adaptations. They managed to bring a novel written in 1952 to screen in its entirety and update it wonderfully.

    I would have to go with From Russia with Love, whilst it is not my favourite film, and I think the first half drags a touch, the second half after they have nabbed the Lektor is awesome and more than repays your patience.

    I would probably say any of the last three, which are amazing FILMS and not just Bond films.

    I would also nominate Dr. No (for being so novel) and FRWL for such a dynamic story.

    For the Moore era, I think TMWTGG and MR had some of the greatest lines.

    My nominees are...
    1) FRWL - A great spy story made even better
    2) GF - An implausible and weak story transformed into a great movie and cinematic history.
    3) OHMSS - Along with FRWL the world of Ian Fleming is rendered onto film.
    3) CR - Brilliant post modernist take on the first novel
