Categorize your top 10 Bonds

IMO, there are three categories.
1) Fairly serious/very Fleming
2) Moderately serious/Flemingesque
3) Pretty out there/FINO (Fleming in name only)

So, this is to find out your (and my) leanings, Bond-movie-wise.

My top ten (no ties):
1. TLD- 1
2. LTK- 1
3. TND- 3
4. DN- 1
5. FRWL-1
6. YOLT- 3
7. GE- 2
8. OHMSS- 1
9. TWINE- 2
10. QOS- 2

Category 1 got 5
Category 2 got 3
Category 3 got 2

So, I got a fairly even spread leaning a bit more towards #1.

Of course, there will be personal ideas of what precisely fits into each category, but let's see what happens here.

My opinion keeps shifting but I'd say this is generally my top 10, and I'll rank them on your scale.

1. CR 1
2. TSWLM 1
3. LTK 1
4. GF 2
5. OHMSS 1
6. TLD 2
7. SF 2
8. FRWL 1
9. FYEO 1
10. OP 3

Note: TSWLM's film script had no elements of Fleming's book (which he himself admitted was bad), but I think that the film was to the 70's what Dr. No was to the 60's.

So mostly serious, but my list also has Octopussy (the silliest one of all) to round it out.

One more thought before I step out. I think the nature of Bond films should be serious and tied to Fleming's works, but there also needs to be a balance with some fantasy-like ones as well. And every so often, there needs to be something totally absurd.

I explained above already but I'll elaborate.

The main thing that keeps it at 1 for me was historical accuracy, which has been the basis of the movies being successful. You have Dr. No at 1 but if it didn't come out during the Cold War, it would've been a total joke. TSWLM came out during the middle of detente, so the exaggerations of reality in the movie were more tolerable in that regard.

I'm not well up on Fleming's work (I've only read two novels) but I understand the essence of the books so it'd appear I prefer a more serious take on the Bond character. My number 10 spot keeps changing with THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, GOLDENEYE, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY & QUANTUM OF SOLACE. Currently it's LIVE & LET DIE, a film which just gets better with every viewing.
