The OHMSS inclusion was a masterstroke given this is clearly Mendes' love letter to this movie. While not a remake or really even a reimaging of OHMSS, it would take a fool (or non Bond fanatic) to not see the less than subtle homages to the film. Especially if you've read the script.
Hopefully it was a conscious decision by the kids and Mendes and the film contains the same thematic nods.
Agreed. The biggest homage was the first thing we saw at the press announcement in December; i.e. the bullet crack.

The OHMSS theme will probably be more than just a nod. I expect something similar to what they did in CR with the Bond Theme. Subtle musical cues here and there, and then the full blown theme in a key scene of the movie. There's no reason not to use it really and would be a great way to convey that we are watching Bond's battle with Spectre which is closely linked with OHMSS,even though it's not a remake.
I'm not sure if it was mentioned (too much posts by know to follow!) but there is also an Aston Martin Vanquish second generation in the Q lab, right to Bond's left when he's asking Q to make him dissapear. Aston Martin overdose!
That will make it look like Aston might have some sort of contract with MI6 for delivering vehicles, which would explain the made-to-order DB10.
I noticed the other Aston Martin. Though it's a clear example of product placement, I like that Bond's car isn't the only one in Q's lab. It would be great if they had another 00-agent receiving it in the background.
It looks like the front on of a DB5 as well next to it.
Keep in mind that the trailer's music has nothing to do with the film's OST. Bond trailers typically feature different music from the actual film, unless the music has come from a previous Bond film (which hasn't been done in some time). Contrary to what has been reported, the trailer's music was not written by Thomas Newman. People have only been assuming that Thomas Newman scored the trailer since he will be scoring the film. It doesn't sound like Thomas Newman's work (the trailer music focuses too much on themes!). See this tweet for who did the music for the trailer:

I enjoyed Newman's score for SF, in fact I thought some tracks were

tracks would be very welcome.

Oh no I enjoyed it and like you said a lot of great tracks; however, I really miss the big "brassy" Bond soundtracks. I really like the music in the PTS of Skyfall just wish the Bond theme overall was used more.

I agree. I think the filmmakers are scared of it becoming to cliché quickly or something. Loved the part with the DB5 when the Bond theme popped up in Skyfall!
I think that's one of the biggest issues for the film makers. Most of the
Audience in the cinema, are not Bond fanatics, just an average movie
audience looking for a good night out. So they have to try and balance
any nods to past films and the introduction of Characters, which may be
New to the newer audiences.

sort of agree there , after the disappointment of QOS Bond sort of lost it's way and the db5 was bought back by craig , medes and wilson to bring the audience back to the fact your watching bond and nothing much has changed.
It was a gradual process to say BOND is back :007) in my humble opinion.
Can't wait for the DB10 in action, about time for new
It almost seems as if this film should have been the 50th anniversary one. So many nods to previous Bond films are going on here. Also the fact it looks like an old school Bond movie.
Maniacal villain with chinese collar- check
Brutal henchman- check
New car and Q lab scene- check
Outrageous stunts- check
Gorgeous women- check
One liners- check
So far ticked all my boxes for a Bond movie. Can't wait.
Quist: So far, I count two other "Bond necessities" from the trailers: M chewing out Bond in his office, and the immortal "Bond, James Bond" line. Now we'll just have to wait and see if he orders a vodka martini
The DB5 reveal felt like a cheap thrill to wow the average moviegoer, and they sure succeeded. Got some gasps in the cinema.
I'm more looking forward to the DB10 reveal
95% of the people who go to the cinema to watch a Bond film are looking for a few cheap thrills. If they're not there, you have QoS, which is just as maligned among the vanguard of serious Bond fans as it is among the general public. Too many cheap thrills and you have DAD, which is a film with no redeeming qualities. So the filmmakers have to strike a delicate balance and I think the DB5 in Skyfall was a tasteful way to do that.

With regards to the use of the James Bond Theme and music from OHMSS. I prefer that the Bond Theme be used judiciously in the films. I liked the way it was used in SF and the musical cue for the DB5 reveal was excellent. IMO, the Bond Theme was overused in the Brosnan films....they appeared to fall back to it for every big action scene. I do believe that EON has a treasure trove of musical themes and cues from the Barry scored films (some recurring in mutiple films) and should utilize them once again in that manner. I think an arrangement of "007" could fit very well just as it did in FRWL and TB. It will be interesting if musical themes from OHMSS are actually incorporated into the score of SPECTRE and not just the trailer.
To be honest, I hope that Newman has a more theme based score with more brass and stuff. You know like the older Barry or Arnold scores.
YES PLEASE
I don't know if Newman is able to do that. That's not what he does. But maybe if he is forced to use other people's themes he can do it. He's really not great at writing themes. He's better at mood music.
Way back when I thought that Connery could never be replaced as Bond.....which proved to not be true, it was just the emotions of a young fan who grew up with Connery as Bond. IMO, John Barry has never been adaquately replaced. David Arnold came close on CR. QOS was hindered by an awful title theme. Others have done decent jobs on the scores but nothing memorable. David Newman is certainly a talented film composer. His work on Skyfall was decent IMO. To me, it's not a Thomas Newman score, but a James Bond score. I think it's time to see what he could do as an arranger and adapter with some of Barry's classic themes.
I love the scene in the helicopter, as it manoeuvres going upside down
You can see Bond's tie and various bits inside the helicopter, appearing
to move upwards. -{ it's only a brief glimpse but very impressive.

There are composers and then, there are COMPOSERS. I can barely remember a single track from any of the films after Barry, but I can remember nearly every single track from his compositions. The same goes with the giants like Goldsmith, Herrmann, Williams, Horner, Morricone, etc. They're genius of creating iconic sounds and signature motifs that frame the films so well is almost impossible to match. I still can't believe we just lot Horner.
Barry has written scores for some non-Bond films that the score was way better than the film.
That would probably apply even more for Morricone who composed some beautiful scores for some pretty funky Italian films.
When Martin Scorsese remade "Cape Fear" he re-used Bernard Herrmann's original score.
The MI series utilizes the classic themes from the original TV show to very good effect...it's about time the Bond films began to do the same beyond the Bond Theme.
Barry's score in Zulu is awesome, which I think is some of his best work. The Ipcress File is fantastic as well.
I hope we can go back music wise in SPECTRE the reworking of the OHMSS theme is encouraging assuming it appears in the film. We all know that there is many a slip between cup and lip.
I actually don't want the OHMSS theme in Spectre. That was a theme for a certain film, and I don't think it belongs in any other film. Themes I would be okay with returning: 007, James Bond is Back (the first eight bars of the FRWL opening titles) and Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. These are themes tied to the James Bond character and not the movies, though Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was exclusive to TB.

Exactly. Not the actual theme music, but the secondary themes that would show up film to film in different arrangements. So much gold to mine in those vaults. I have my reservations re the idea of Quentin Tarantino directing a Bond film but one thing you could bet on is that he would want to utilize the Barry scores for musical ideas.

I'd settle for champagne, which by the amount he drinks would have to be his favorite drink. It's just not as unique as the vodka martini.
