What exactly is wrong with Dr Holly Goodhead?

A much misunderstood companion.

I see in the opinion polls she never scores very highly with only Stacey,Christmas and Jinx doing worse. To be honest, Holly rates highly with me. Shes there to counterbalance Bond. She has that little bit of gravitas too countermand his jokes. She also is pretty proficient, handles herself in a fight and takes part in the laser battle.

She also has technical knowledge and is able to pilot the Moonraker to the space station. At the end when he is chasing the globes its her which puts the shuttle on the right trajectory

So she injects the tiniest bit of seriousness in a silly film.

I like Holly Goodhead & love Lois Chiles. I was most smitten with her after MOONRAKER & her previous film, DEATH ON THE NILE - I was a very impressionable lad aged 11! I always wanted to meet a woman who looked like her. Didn't quite work out that way, though.

I too always found Dr Goodhead very sexy. -{ and like Stag I think
Stacy was also very sexy, but as in Fifty Shades of Grey, she'd have to
Be gagged most of the time. :D

She was a terrible actress, and was like everything else in the film and worse version on anya from the spy who loved me.

I re-watched Moonraker on Monday night, I found her to be very good to be honest.

Far better than Anya in TSWLM.

I liked her at exactly ten.I used to watch her play Holly Harwood in Dallas where she took on JR. She was good in Death on theNile. I hear she teaches drama at Houston university nowadays.

I've always found her a so-so Bond Girl. But she has one of the best Lines in the Franchise -

Goodhead was less misogynistic than the other 'Bond Girls' of her era.

Solitaire's entire talents were contingent on her being a virgin.
Goodnight was just a ditzy blonde bikini girl.
Stacy Sutton was 35+ years younger than Roger Moore.

At least Maud Adams/Octopussy was believable because she was close to Moore's age

Dr. Goodhead was supposed to be the feminist anti-Bond girl. The Vasser graduate Phd astronaut CIA agent. But she was still named Holly Goodhead. It was another example of the Bond franchise not knowing where to go in the 70s.

The movie did make a bunch of dough, though.

A forgettable character in a truly awful film.

That sums it up for me, too. Chiles is an attractive woman, but her portrayal of Goodnight is boring and doesn't really stand out in any way. Although I believe the script doesn't give her much to work with, Childs could have put a bit more life into the character if she had tried harder or was a better actress.

She's just a boring character. And this is from someone who likes moonraker. She's not memorable.

I like Dr Holly Goodhead but then I love Moonraker, daft as it is.

She competes against Bond rather than complements him and is played by an actress of limited range, little charm, and slightly-better-than-average looks. It's the reason you will never see these words together anywhere else: "Lois Chiles Film Festival."

She's written competitive at the beginning (not in the Jinx league) but the seventies Bond girls were written like that. The screenwriters thought they were doing her a service. They thought it different to write her as a CIA operative rather like Anya who was 007's equal in the KGB. She even has the American equivalent of Q items like he has.

The difference was humour. WhereMoore went overboard with his humour Holly pulls back from that and gives us the gravitas the film desperately needs.

Agree. They wanted to rethink one convention and keep the other. Better a good Goodhead than a bad Goodnight though.

I don't find her acting wooden, it's just that she lacked chemistry with Sir Roger. By contrast his scenes with the infinitely more appealing (just IMO :D ) Corinne Clery are far better - they have real chemistry, partly because CC has more sex appeal than Lois Chiles.

Dr Goodhead seems to tolerate Bond for most of the film, compared with Major Amasova, who sparred with Bond and viewed him as a challenge and a threat - making TSWLM the better film for it.
