I really enjoyed the first one, and was disappointed by the rest.

    Not a patch on Bond.

I know the Bond films are a bit formulaic.

But if I have to see Tom Cruise attached to wires again in some kind of elaborate "heist plan" I reckon I will cry.

The first time it was good, the second "meh" the third and fourth "whatever".

I think MI are good action movies, some are very good. But Ethan Hunt has little or no personality or personal history, something that makes him less interesting than James Bond.

That's true, we know nothing at all about the Character.

And I guess it's too late now to just dump some interesting backstory on him. It is what it is.

I was just about to post on this very point, but from the opposite end. As far as what has been portrayed about the Bond and Hunt characters, it seems that Ethan Hunt has a very different private life, with suburban trappings (and even rural as hinted in MI1), who is socially integrated within his fake civilian fascade, complete with a fake, "boring" profession, similar to True Lies, but seemingly more vibrant even.

Hunt the hero, is like Bond the hero, playing point man but heavily within the context of a team; Bond on the otherhand has traditionally been the lone wolf, though in SF we see him working in the context of a team, integrally conjoined with that team via comm system, yet the rest of that team save for M and MPenny are intentionally left bland. In M:I, it's interesting to watch how EH comes near at times, but avoids being the absolute alpha male of the team; he is aware of the value and validity of each of the other team members and recognizes he is one voice of four or five, etc.

Ultimately, vs. Bond, Hunt comes off as more human, particularly in personal struggles and frustrations that are common to regular people. Hunt knows that roles are roles and tuxedos are just props, being aware that he's just a normal guy doing a job and not a natural connoisseur of spirits and fine automobiles though he knows how to "drive" them tactically when needed. In the climax of M:I 1, I think it was symbolic (as well as practical) for Hunt to shed his coat and tie atop the Eurostar train, to get the job done, when it wasn't appropriate to be just another suited James Bond.

    I enjoyed MI:1 and MI:4 , didn't think much of 2 & 3.

    Same here.

I was really into MI: 1 and saw it multiple times in the cinema and bought the soundtrack on cassette tape.

Most recently I saw Ghost Protocol in the iMax theatre and thought it was awesome!

That being said, I am ignorant of the original Mission Impossible TV series. I'll rent one on Netflix and get back to you on that.

As far as rating MI ahead of any Bond films…It's apples and oranges for me. I can't do it. Although it's safe to say I like them better than the Daniel Craig films.

The series was much like Star Trek in that when it was bad, it was very *meh* but when it was good it was actually great.

I understand a lot of fans of the MI TV series are understandably upset by the Tom Cruise vanity project films. Killing off other team members, making Jim Phelps the villain, focusing on Ethan Hunt as a lone wolf 007 type figure.

I recall Ghost Protocol being more of a "team effort", although I wasn't dwelling upon it at the time.

I think GP was the best so far, but it's a different animal than the series. I actually really like MI:2 for the Bond vibe.

Many a Ryanair passenger has done the same thing :))

    One thing about Tom, he loves a bit of stunt work. -{

That is one reason I like M:I; all pf Tom Cruise's stunts are done by himself with no/little CGI added, only to remove wires. One thing about the first film is that Ethan isn't strong and muscle-y like he is in the later films; he looks like a regular guy, and doesn't do a lot, if any, fighting in this film. Whereas in the latter ones, he's an action hero like John McClane or Craig's Bond. I say that about Craig's bond because I don't think Bond should be that strong or big.

To be honest, I wouldn't think so. Old Tom seems to enjoy speed, danger and
Stunt work ? So I'd say he'll keep them up as long as he can.
