What recipes are you or your barmen using? Kina Lillet isn't being made anymore and Lillet Blanc has a different taste. I've heard combining Lillet Blanc with a dash of quinine powder can work, or using Cocchi Americano aperitif in place of Kina Lillet. Also you need to use 94 proof gin and 100 proof vodka to match the proofs used at the time CR was originally published.
Technically it's not a "Martini" since it contains no Martini products. It is a cocktail called Vesper. -{
But never the less it is an excellent choice for tipple no matter what the ocation.
BTW: I hate it when something that isn't a Martini is labeled either as a Martini or "xxxx-tini"; you know "chocotini" "appletini" dog mad "bacontini". All these "hip" bartenders believe that just because you put it in a cocktail glass, what ever it is, you can call it a *tini if you please.

I hosted a "Hollywood Tribute to Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday" cocktail party last night and this version of the Vesper was quite a hit:
3 parts Blade gin
1 part Grey Goose vodka
1/2 part Cocchi Americano
combine in shaker with ice
shake vigorously
strain into cocktail glass
add slice of lemon peel
A cocktail glass differs from a martini glass; it's smaller and its bowl is more rounded than conical. I premixed the liquid ingredients in a carafe, and each drink consisted of three measured shots of the mixture.
I tried one for the first time last week using Belvedere, Gordon's and Cocchi Americano. At first I thought it was aful but actually started to really like it. Very strong though. Not sure how Bond managed to drink six of them in QoS or be able to drive the DBS in Casino Royale.

At the Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style exhibit when it was here in Toronto a few years back, the restaurant at the TIFF Lightbox was making them and it's the first time I ever tried one. Needless to say the wife and I are hooked on them as it's our favourite drink now.

Went to happy hour today at MY China in San Francisco. Ordered a Vesper. It came stirred and was made with Lillet Blanc instead of the advertised Cocchi Americano, which is very like the old Kina Lillet. It was flat and had no character. I had the barman add angostura bitters and it was much improved in taste and color.
Without the slight bitterness, a Vesper isn't a Vesper.

As for quantities: I use the ladies breast rule - one is not enough and three is too many.
On the subject of Kina Lillet, if I could find out which herbs and aromatics went into it I might have a bash at some home made stuff.
