    Best to last:

Thunderball (First time I saw it, I was 9 years old - 1972. I was in awe at how cool and exciting it was... scuba diving, sharks, gadgets, the jet-pack escape, and the underwater fight scenes, blew me away as a kid.)

Goldfinger - The DB5... need I say more?

Casino Royale - My favorite DC performance as Bond to date

    Skyfall

From Russia With Love - great plot

The World Is Not Enough - IMHO, Brosnan's best performance as Bond

    Goldeneye

    Dr. No

    On Her Majesty's Secret Service

    The Living Daylights

(I know, I Know, what about any of the Roger Moore films? I'll give TMWTGG an honorable mention.)

A lot of people say FYEO is the best or 2nd best movie Moore made.

I enjoyed the movie, but it just doesn't do anything that stands out either.
  • Gassy ManGassy Man USAPosts: 2,972MI6 Agent
It's one of the few Moore films that is Fleming-esque and plausible. It borrows a lot from previous films -- especially On Her Majesty's Secret Service -- but relies more on plot and character than jokes and spectacle. I admire it for letting the revenge part not be Bond's but the girl's, allowing Bond to be a professional rather than the overplayed rogue agent out for revenge that by today has gotten tiresome. Not everyone will like it, and I wasn't as impressed by it when I saw it in the theater as a young teenager, but as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate what it offers.
  • Absolutely_CartAbsolutely_Cart NJ/NYC, United StatesPosts: 1,740MI6 Agent
FYEO ticks the boxes of what people want. It's a serious Bond featuring Moore. It's objectively good. I notice that as people get older they appreciate subtlety. FYEO isn't as accessible as Moore's other over-the-top movies which were made to entertain kids. Subtlety, I guess. I used to think Dr. No was outdated but now I feel it's aged incredibly.

But with FYEO, there's just nothing that made me care about it. The story was plain and none of the characters were relatable. There was no one to root for or empathize with. Kristatos, for example. A total asshole, but not more terrifying or intimidating than your average coward wife-beating alcoholic scum.

I re watched after I originally posted about FYEO - and really enjoyed it, and after rewatching some Moore ones, I moved it up a bit. I also moved LALD up and LTK.

FYEO ticks the boxes of what people want.

    Exactly after Moonraker?
It's a serious Bond featuring Moore. It's objectively good. I notice that as people get older they appreciate subtlety.

Perhaps its because the serious approach so fresh in 1981 after ten years of Roger playing it for laughs. In the meantime we’ve had Casino Royale and Licence to Kill so a down-to-earth Bond isnt fresh anymore. Another accusation is that the pace is too slow and scenes underwater messing about with a mini-submarine or in the winchhouse of the Greek monastery dont perhaps move at Bourne pace. Has the audience changed that much it cant relax and enjoy the moment rather then wait for the next thrill
But with FYEO, there's just nothing that made me care about it. The story was plain and none of the characters were relatable..

Carole Bouquet is now a leading French actress and has presented the Palm D’Or ceremony at Cannes and was the face of Chanel for a number of years. But this was her first international screen role and she is very good. Melina is a marine archeologist who witnesses her parents being gunned down by Gonzales aboard their research vessel ‘The Triana’. The director and scriptwriter is very good at inferring a close family and the sight of Melina’s grief and disbelief is reflected in her eyes. But the link between her Greek heritage and revenge is made - she quotes Electra, who destroyed her father’s murderers in Greek mythology. This is one of the strongest female roles ever written for a Bond film.
F There was no one to root for or empathize with. Kristatos, for example. A total asshole, but not more terrifying or intimidating than your average coward wife-beating alcoholic scum.

Kristatos was a crook. A greek crook. Trusted by the British he was looking out for the Russians. The switch that he was the villain was taken from the book. FYEO follows the book closely..

Well, I like the way it takes itself and the situations Bond is in seriously. For ten years before we had superman Bond where you knew he was going to escape from every situation with a quip and a gadget. This time we didnt – how is he going to escape death when kicked off the edge of a thousand foot cliff? How is he going to escape the fishes when keelhauled behind a motoryacht?

And the story was so relevant then. 1981 saw, under Reagan and Thatcher, the Cold War start up again.Defence became big news. The spending on Polaris was a hot issue. The amount the USSR and USA were spending on nuclear weapons was beginning to bankrupt the pair of them. The little countries of the world were just pawns for games of the superpowers. And that sort of fits this story. If Russia gets the ATAC she would gain an unfair advantage of us or bankrupt us trying to change the system. The “That’s detente comrade..” at the climax was to show the futility of the arms race.

To be honest it says alot for all those who saw it as DVD or on the telly then seeing it on the bigscreen.

The first half of Die Another Day is pretty good, and there are moments in the film where it feels like a Bond movie rather than a Michael Bay one. A View to a Kill just feels tired most of the time -- it has some nice scenery, a few good moments with the always delightful Patrick MacNee, a decent soundtrack, and some nice looking women, but that's about it.
