I hate to say it but my Steinhart Ocean keeps better time than my Rolex submariners and no heart attack every time I wack it on the wall as I clumsily walk past. I am not too fussed about scratching my Omega or my Steinhart so maybe that says something. I wont offer to meet anyone simply because I am anti social. Anyone got the time ?

Not a hater but do find the designs a bit too close for comfort to some models e.g. Deepsea.

I would go this route any day over a FAKE!!

I have one too. German made, swiss movement. A great watch that I use as one of my beaters and much larger than the Rolex 6538, 5510 or the MKII Kingston.

    Hi all,
As there are many of you who know both brands, I would like to adress you a question.
I am thinking about buying a "first proper watch". After the graduation from the university I am planning to travel and lead an active lifestyle before I settle down. Basically, I am looking for a watch which can fare just as well in a rainforest, desert, dust as underwater and after I am done with the adventures, still makes a nice watch.
The Sub's toughness is legendary, but for the price of a 10-20 year old one I can buy a SM 300 Master (with a nice discount I was offered).
So I am deciding between the SM 300 and PO 2500. Are these pieces really that much of inferior quality to consider a Sub? Are they watches to pet or can withstand a pressure? If they are worthy to buy, would it be better to strap on the NATO (300) or the rubber strap (PO) instead of the bracelet?
Thanks for the insights and responds, I appreciate your views :-)

    In a nutshell

    1) Any of them will take a beating
    2) Rolex has better resell value if thats important

Choose the one you prefer looking at

Non of the divers will particularly like fine desert dust, but can be cleaned ( rotating bezel) I prefer a nato to the rubber straps but both are practical, and if your travelling in any slightly nefarious areas take the look of the watch down and not as expensive looking as on a bracelet. The omega 2500 is venerable, as are the rolex movements.

I agree with both answers above.
Given your situation above I think I'd go with either Omega and put it on a NATO which is far more suitable and comfortable in all those environments. Also cheap and so simple to change, so you can have a choice.
I chose an Omega Seamadter as my daily user when I was working in the Desert and also used it diving. In my opinion, it also looks pretty smart when you want to dress it up.
Save for the Rolex later, one watch is never going to be enough anyway!
    Good luck!

    Personally, I've found one watch to be enough. I love my Submariner! -{

You might want to consider a Tudor Black Bay as well. The price point is lower than both the Omega and the Sub, but you still get a robust watch that can take a beating. It's not a Rolex, but it's got Rolex genes.

    Seconded on the Tudor.

Of all the watches I've owned (including Rolexes and Omegas), I've never gotten more compliments than on this one:

I was at a wedding last weekend and on our table of 10 people, 8 were wearing Rolex. Thats what puts me off them, everyone has one. Great watches mind, no doubt about that.

Stop the press Higgins and ASP 9MM agree on something :)) :))
I have a Rolex GMT and a Omega PO (QOS model) In my mind Rolex is the true Bond brand watch ,but as most of my clothing is Craig era based ,I do tend to opt more for the PO , ,I for one would love to see ROLEX back on Bonds wrist
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

After finally catching up, I'll do my best to answer you all. Really appreciate your help.
Actually I was strongly considering Tudor as well! The Black Bays are absolutely gorgeous timepieces, my only concern is that I strongly dislike the snowflake hands :-/
Yes, I am fully aware of the fact Rolex has stronger brand recognition as Omega, but I plan on using it as an utility watch not a status symbol. Since the price of the new Omega 300 with a discount is the same as a 10-20 years old Sub using movement just as reliable on paper plus being anti-magnetic. I very much like the independent hour hands. So my concern really was about the shock resistance.
Dust is a tough enemy to the watches, but a diver can handle it a bit better than a high-end one, I assume.
I also think a NATO "out in the wild" is a better choice. If it was good-enough for the soldiers in the WW2, the high-quality OEM Omega NATO should fare even better.
Rolex may be the pinnacle, and even when I plan to own a Submariner at some point, thanks to the conversion position from utility watch to status symbol, it does not offer the same "bang for bucks" as Omega or Tudor.
(Hope I did not offend any Rolex owner with he post, it is not my intention)

Just make sure the Omega is a keeper and dont pay full rrp

I just sold a few of my Rolex collection (2/3 year old watches) and broke there about even overall which was very nice!!!!

Last year my 6 week old Omega Seamaster Master Co-Axial was sold at a 600 pound loss and I got a hefty discount when I purchased it six weeks earlier!

PS - I started as a "one watch" guy (well we all do :)) )

What do you think is an adequate price for the 300 MC?

Yeah, interest in one watch introduces you to the whole watch industry, then you find yourself thinking about another and another... :D

Thus picking up THE right one is equally as challenging as saving up for it :-D
  • welshboy78welshboy78 Posts: 10,320MI6 Agent
Well I sold a mint one for around £2600 and one sold just over £2700 on TZ-UK forum last month or so (1 month old). This should give you an idea how cheap certain Omegas can be picked up if its not a ltd edition.

Welshboy is right, they are going for that kind of money, I've seen unworn examples going for £3200 from private sellers. If you want to buy from an authorised dealer or omega boutique, ask for discount, if you don't ask you won't get, cheapest and safest option is probably a good independent dealer. I used to buy from the USA and have them triangle posted but the pound value has slightly upset that one at the moment. I wouldn't touch eBay for such a purchase personally. It would be a good idea to join. Some of the watch forums, the omega forum, watchuseek, tz-uk etc as any item a for sale on these forums are available to members.
It's also worth putting a wanted post out on here. I know a few members who bought the standard SM300 when it was identified as bonds watch then looked on in horror as the limited edition came out.
Good luck and enjoy your new purchase, a lovely watch.
