For me, they are simply the best two American movies ever made. Love them :)) Anybody have any love, thoughts and opinions to share about these these two flicks?

Two great movies (the third is still ok, though not in their league).
Years ago I remember watching them as a TV series, re-edited in chronological order with extra footage. I've never seen that version for sale.

Loved them (the Godfather films, not the Barney adventures :D ). The first still has the greatest impact, but the second is fascinating, a sprawling study of how an empire is won and lost.

I think it still holds the record for a sequel to an Oscar winning film
also winning an Oscar ? ( Best Picture)

I have the boxset too but I have yet to watch any of them. I must rectify that!

The Return of The King won the 2003 Oscar for best picture, however you are right, it is the only sequel to a best picture winning film to also win. Whilst we're on the topic of Oscars I cannot believe that Al Pacino did not win Best Actor, he is phenomenal in this, surely one of the best performances ever.

I think one of the things that is great about the 2 films, and something that perhaps puts them over the top of other films, is that despite being very mainstream, major productions, they are incredibly artistic and personal movies, which is obviously down to Coppola. It's rare to see that personal vision in such major studio productions these days. Particularly the second film, where the story is at times pretty subtle, everything is not clearly spelt out, it treats the audience with intelligence and goes against genre cliches.

IMHO "The Return" got its Oscar as a cumulative award- really, LOTR is just one massive picture. And yes, Pacino should have got an Oscar.
