Domino Derval/Petacchi/Vitali? What gives?

broadshoulderbroadshoulder Acton, London, UKPosts: 1,363MI6 Agent
Shes been called the most beautiful of Bond girls

Claudine Auger is a stunner. But what do you think about her character?

She's officially an enemy. She's Largos mistress. Heaven knows why Largo was allowed to take his mistress along for the ride. Auger is good at playing "the rich bitch" Domino has soft charcoal slits for eyes and a 'gay, to hell with you face'. Bond compares her to a 'beautiful arab mare'.

Underneath we see a different Domino, he sees through her hardened shell and inside is a fragile girl who wants to break away from her captivity. She's also the bravest of the Bond heroines. She doesn't confess under torture and saves Bonds life by shooting Largo with a harpoon.

So whats your favourite Domino? The Thunderball one? the NSNA one? or the one from the novel?

The novel version, perhaps simply because we learn more about her (the "Cardboard Hero" story helps).

I do like the TB one. :x I always thought Largo kept her close , so if needed
He could apply some extra pressure on her Brother ? NSNA, is a film, I find
Very slow and I think Kim Basinger is miscast, but it's not an official film
So I guess they were trying to walk the line between a familiar story and yet
Still doing something a little different. :)

To be honest, I'm not particularly fond of either of the movie versions and I haven't read the novel. However, as far as looks are concerned, I prefer Kim Basinger in NSNA.

I don't like the TB one and not read the novel. Basinger was a cool Domino though.

A word for Nikki van der Zyl, who dubbed Auger (and many others, of course). Embroiled in controversy these days, but an unsung key factor in the early Bonds.

Mine would be the novel version. it seems extraordinary when she goes after Largo..

The TB was superb. But NSNA didn't work.

    Agreed!
No slight on Ms Basinger's beauty, which is unquestionable, but she looks desperately unhappy for the entire movie and only part of that is in character. TB (the film)'s Domino has more light and shade.

Easily Claudine Auger! - I mean, come on! She wasn't Miss France for nothing! :D

I'm slowly getting through them at the moment. I've read the first seven and i'm currently reading the short stories. But yes, my expertise on the novels is no where near my knowledge on the movies. But I'm improving myself :)

+1, It's a great story, I've many happy memories reading it during one
Of our many glorious summers on a beach, sand between my toes, as Bond
    Does something similar. ;)

Wasn't the Novel Domino blonde? That for me along with many other things one would find in the books puts Fleming's vision of Bond's world in a different perspective, especially for someone who first saw the movies. I don't picture her as the doe-like blonde played by Bassinger and I didn't particularly like Claudine Auger's so-so portrayal. When I first read the book, I got hooked in by the Cardboard Hero chapter and we really got to see just the right amount of "attitude" to make her interesting, more so than the blonde Literary Tracy, for example. We get that sense of a tough chick without being to rough on the edges like the blonde Literary Tiffany (though in context, I really liked her character as well). She was also playful, imaginative and modernly liberated, to have said what she shared with Bond, a practical stranger she had just met. The clincher for me, however, is making her blonde, and not just the typical Fleming blonde mold, but an Italian blonde in contrast to a Mediterranean looking Italian girl; in my imagination, book Domino looked along the lines of a Virna Lisi, having a cool and sultry allure about her.

In that context, how about the young Bardot?

Fleming did like his Blondes. :)

I love her too! What appeals to me with the Domino character is the combination of being Italian and blonde and imagining how she'd sound, just how Luciana Paluzzi was so hot with her accent (but please don't tell me she was dubbed!) and her red hair, again, not typically Mediterranean (though to be honest, "Mediterranean" is my personal preference)
Fleming did like his Blondes. :)
He was a regular Alfred Hitchcock, wasn't he?

No, the divine Luciana wasn't dubbed.

Wasn't her character Fiona, originally going to be Irish ?might explain the red hair
but not the Italian accent ! :))

Yes, quite right TP. Maibaum had called her "Fiona Kelly" but the surname was changed when Luciana :x was cast- just as Domino's surname was changed to "Derval" when the French Claudine Auger was cast. There are other instances n the series- for example, Christopher Wood's "Trudi Parker" became Corrine Dufour when Corrine Clery was cast in MR.

I looked and she's not bad. But to me, Basinger is sexier and more appealing. Luciana Paluzzi easily trumps them both, though! :D

I don't know what it is but for me Bassinger always looked an older
Lady, even when she was younger. :D

+1. It always bothered me when they changed the hair color of the character in the EON films. I had read the novel before the film came out and it really threw me off. Speaking of Lisi, I stated in other posts that I thought she would have made a Tracy much closer to Fleming's idea of the character.

Domino's "hero" story started out cute enough, but she rambled on-and-on to the point where I really felt sorry for Bond having to politely endure that drivel.

"Are you listening to me? You are not bored having to listen about my Hero?" asked Domino.

"I'm only jealous," Bond lied, but in his head he was thinking, "This girl is completely nuts and this hero story is boring and it sucks."
