Opinion shifts you noticed in the past 5-10 years

Of course this is a little subjective, but in the Bond community as a whole, have you noticed any major changes in fans'/critics opinions of the actors and films?

The obvious one would be "Daniel Craig is not Bond" to "Wow. Craig is a great Bond"

I've also noticed that Octopussy tends to be climbing its way out of the bottom bunch and is getting a little following with some fans.

A lot of the original Craig haters have since become Fans of his Bond Output. I would say the Dalton Films have received more Attention in the last Decade too.

The Brosnan era has been eclipsed by the Craig films. Films like TND and DAD haven't pulled themselves up.

I don't know about the last 5 - 10, but the last 15 years have seen a gigantic upswing in opinion on OHMSS -- and rightly so, too. B-)

Brosnan began as being thought very highly of, but has dropped in
    The rankings over the years.

That was really the Problem with the Scripts though, and not Brosnan himself.

These are mearly observations as I see thrm but...

    1) Mr Craig's potrayal has made a lot of doubting thomases think twice.

    2) Sir Roger has become the veteran Bond. His open appreciation to the fans speaks volumes.

    3) I agree - OHMSS now gets the correct artistic recognition it deserves, as does Mr Lazemby for his potrayal of Bond.

    4) Mr Brosnan has been getting recognition as the right actor at the right time in the 90s but with the wrong scripts.

    5) Sir Sean's status as "the original greatest Bond" has been blunted by the public perception of his sulky retirement and wirhdrawl from public life. Except for his political positions. Ouch.

    6) In part due to her potrayal of both versions of M, Dame Judi has become a national treasure.

    7) Skyfall has demonstrated Q's absence and a lack of gadgets can be as big a mistake as too much tech.

    8) Everyone has become fed up with origin stories!
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

I've seen people polls that rank Craig above Connery for best Bond now. I didn't think I'd ever hear a majority of people say that Connery isn't the best Bond.

My personal opinion has seen Craig and his films sink to the bottom after rewatching his Bond films and old Bond films again. I prefer all Bond actors and almost all other Bond films (except most of Brosnan's) over Craig's. Casino Royale didn't hold up for me after watching it a few times. I honestly much prefer Moonraker, though Moonraker has also gone down for me since I was a kid (when it was one of my top favourites).

Good. The controller of CraignotBond.com should be horsewhipped

Rogers stint as Bond has climbed higher and higher

    Agreed

And directors, and casting agents. I don't know how the Broccolis took their eye off the ball

Sadly this is true. Heard today that he's been in touch with Nicola Sturgess, the Scottish nationalist leader

    6) In part due to her potrayal of both versions of M, Dame Judi has become a national treasure.

She is now an international treasure

    7) Skyfall has demonstrated Q's absence and a lack of gadgets can be as big a mistake as too much tech.

    umm not sure

I didn't form an opinion of Craig as Bond until after seeing him as Bond. This site was ridiculous and had no reason to dislike Craig as Bond before even seeing him as Bond. After telling people they should give Craig a chance and not hate him because he has blond hair, I was one of the few who didn't like him after seeing Casino Royale. I liked him a little better after seeing Skyfall, but I'm still not convinced. But I still think that site is absurd.

That's very disappointing. I was certainly fed up with origin stories, and turning Casino Royale into an origin story is the reason I don't like it. I was hoping to see it as just Fleming's story.

I don't find that the character story makes up for Craig's unengaging portrayal (in my opinion).

    Well, that's your opinion...

I'd say the last thing he was unengaging. Also I noticed alot about Craig while they were doing the rounds. I noticed his character was similar to Bonds so when he was announced I was pleased.

Here are some, not all from critics:

    -Connery's films weren't the best
-Dalton is much more popular, even with people who aren't massive fans of Bond (especially LTK)
-Moonraker is moving up on people's list
    -OHMSS is becoming more popular
    -QoS is becoming less popular
-LTK is now a whole lot more popular

I used to loathe George Lazenby, but now I am quite liking him and I think he portrayed James Bond well.
And my brother as some of you know don't care about James Bond is now James Bond fan and OHMSS is his favourite movie all time, not just in Bond catalogue.
Dalton is the Bond! Lazenby is the other fella.

Are you referring to just the AJB community or anyone who loves the Bond films?

I agree within the AJB membership there has been a slight softening of opinions on some films and the actors, though not any total reversals (though I may have missed some).

As to the rest of the public who love the films, I think the shift in opinion on the actors depends on which generation is being asked. In most polls when it comes to those who grew up watching the whole series, Connery usually still comes out on top, followed by Craig. For the current generation, it's reversed.

As for the series itself, the public by and large ate up the big screen spectacle Bonds up until the reboot and though Brosnan's films did as well at the box office (adjusted for inflation) as
as entry like FYEO, there was a dramatic drop from his debut in GE. For a variety of reasons (such as 911 and the Bourne series), the public's opinion changed against large fantasy action films and instead embraced films that dealt with the real current world - which is why the Bourne films and the Dark Night series and rebooted Bond with Craig succeeded as they did and continues to resonate even in the comic book based series like The Avengers (where there is an abundance of fantasy and action but wrapped in dark themes and moral issues).

    Not sure I agree with you there...QoS is popular with the general cinema going public - hence the massive box-office returns...but I don't think it was ever that popular with the 'hard core' Bond fans...although I think it's tremendous and ranks about 3rd overall for me -{

    Okay, recap so far:

Connery is no longer seen as the unanimous best Bond[/*]

Brosnan has declined a little bit in popularity[/*]

Daniel Craig went from maligned to fan favorite[/*]

Craig's approval created a renaissance for the Dalton era[/*]

Lazenby and OHMSS are getting more appreciation too.[/*]
So, basically the approval for each actor has evened out a bit.
