I just finished reading the latest MI6 magazine about Lewis Gilbert's "Monorail Trilogy." It mentioned how the sets for the space station were so large that they monopolized the major French studios and took up every space possible. They made a conscious decision to include space sounds for dramatic effect where scientifically there should be non; which is what they also did with Star Wars. I think the space station is functional and to the question about sleeping quarters, bathrooms, etc., just because these weren't shown doesn't mean that they didn't exist; logically, for the needs of human habitation the existence of those things are implied and looking at the miniature of the station, there are several sub-structures of differing sizes that could account for those.
As for the laser battle, around the time when MR was released the US military had already been experimenting with weaponized lasers for conventional fighting (vs. the larger scale Star Wars satellite weapons program in the Reagan era, which is not too far off from the plots in DAF, GE and DAD). There were experiments of mounting lasers on fighter jets but the official reports from the US Military is that it didn't work. Because the MR shuttle launch predated the actual first shuttle launch, it wouldn't be too fantastic to interpolate the use of laser rifles and if the opposing forces did have them, I don't see a great disparity on them using the lasers the way they did.
Another important thing to note, apart from the purposeful artistic license used to bend the laws of science, the producers did make a point to not show fiery explosions in a vacuum, so for those scenes of flame-less explosions on the space station, they used shotguns to blast off chunks of the space station miniature.
