The Casino Royale Effect

The momentuous popularity of Casino Royale '06 correlates with both the movie before it (Die Another Day) and the movie after it (Quantum of Solace) being unpopular. TWINE and SF have a buffer between them which protects them from extra scrutiny.

I could just imagine Malcolm Gladwell writing a 300 page book called the Casino Royale Effect about how lesser known events that sandwich groundbreaking events are given less credit.

I think you touch on a very interesting subject here. I had never really thought about it this way but I was very enthusiastic when I saw CR in the cinema. After DAD it was such a breath of fresh air that I enjoyed it immensely, however, after several viewings it has slipped quite a bit on my top 24.

GoldenEye was the first Bond film I ever saw in the cinema and I thought (and still do) that it was amazing. After that high point the next three Brosnan movies were a bit of a disappointment an CR was a welcome change.

CR is definitely is a very special case. A totally unexpected classic. I agree it might dwarf a bit the movies before and after, but the movies were simply not as good . If CR was good but more like average-good (as SF for instance), DAD and QoS would still be perceived as inferior. That said, I can tell that DAD if vastly inferior to QoS, CR or no CR.

The gap in time and the 'clean break' helped Casino Royale enormously. It reflects the era in which it was made pretty well, with modern cynicism and keeping the glamour that people enjoyed and dispensing with the well-worn innuendos.
