I found this article interesting. Flemming and Dulles were friends, and Dulles helped persuade Fleming not to kill off Bond.

    There's a bit in the authors notes from J Gardner about Fleming and
    Dulles being friends in " For special services" , gave Fleming a gun
    With that inscription.
    I also remember reading years ago that the CIA tried out following a
    Car, via a homing device, just like Bond in Goldfinger.
