That's the traditional way of pronouncing St John in someone's name. No idea where it came from or when. The WW2 Australian PM Sir Robert Menzies was similarly pronounced "Mingies" by the same people who'd say Sinjin!

It's Smythe, not Smith. That's why it's not pronounced like Smith.

Quite right. The name is pronounced that way as a phonetic 'short-hand' and shortening, much like Cholmondley being pronounced Chumley. -{
