It was that particular time period (the late 60s/early 70s) and George Lazenby blamed his giving up of the Bond role on the Hippy Revolution. His agent gave him what turned out to be the poor advice of with Bond being a conservative character Lazenby would be going down with a sinking ship if he stayed with Bond. Also, his agent told him that as he had played Bond once he would be a superstar and there was therefore no need for him to play the Bond role again as he could move on to brighter and better things. Who really knew back then? Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course but it comes too late to be of any use.
"The tough man of the world. The Secret Agent. The man who was only a silhouette." - Ian Fleming, Moonraker (1955).

Yeah, I know, some guy convinced him that the Bond franchise was finished due to changing attitudes. But George, if he had an ounce of sense and wasn't on drugs, should have considered the fact that he had no other serious offers. I mean were Hitchcock, Peckinpaugh, and Kubrick beating down his door?
Since he had nothing else on tap, why not do Bond and make a ton of dough while learning how to act? And I'm sure that all famous actors have people giving them bad advice, but most of them are smart enough to ignore it.
He was probably exhausted. He went from a used car salesman to an actor on one of the biggest roles in film history. That could drain any inexperienced actor
Walken did acid with Raul Julia in the 60s.....also Walkens deer hunting buddy , de Niro , was supposedly gonna do coke with Belushi the day Belushi died , this prolly scared the crap out of de Niro & he quit drugs.

I'd always ascribed the decision to a lack of intelligence.
