Of course - re castings happen all the time in big franchises. If people couldn't handle a drastic change, do you think people would want Elba as Bond?
Not sure if it wasn't the media who wanted Idris Elba. The Bond fans wern't so sure. He's getting fed up about being quizzed by the press...
Nope...not the press...but it was the press that mis-quoted a story and then all this silliness started 8-)
It looks like there are a lot of great opinions out there! I'm doing some research for a school project on who should play the next James Bond and compiling results through a survey. Please take this quick 5-10 minute survey to provide your opinion! Thanks, Jen (bondgirl321)

I'm a bond fan! I'm also a business grad student, and when we were assigned a research project where we could pick our topic I chose this! I decided to do research as if I'm presenting to Warner Brothers with my research findings and recommendations on who should play the next James Bond based on the findings. I'm excited about this project!
I've just finished the survey, and I liked most of it. But the suggestions for the next Bond actor was far too ..... imaginative.
Just to make it clear: I have absoltely nothing against female action stars, I wish there were more of them. But this is not just a any action franchise, but James Bond. Bond has been around since the 1950's. There is a limit to how much one can change while he still remains Bond. Some changes are inevitable or even positive, but most people would agree changing the gender of Bond is unthinkable. Of the candidates you listed I would say 2-3 have a chance of becoming Bond (Tom Hiddleston, Michael Fassbender, Hardy).
I think your list would have been far more realistic with more names such as Clive Standen, Sam Heughan, Rupert Friend, Barry Sloane etc. Actors who are not world famous movie stars, male, fairly traditional Bond look, British, athletic and in their late twenties or thirties.
I would say likely candidates will have this in common: (I may be wrong, but I don't think so ...)
- male
- British, Australian or from NZ
- Between 25 and 45 years old
- Taller than 5' 11''
- Has not been on the cover of major movie magazines
Aidan Turner (of Poldark) and Luke Evans on the other hand, might be contenders.
Id like DC to do one more, I really can't think of anyone else at the moment, but we simply can't have a black James Bond! Its not possible! we can have a black 007 on the basis that James bond retires/resigns and the 007 number becomes vacant.
I completed the survey. I would love to see a female Bond, but no-one on the proposed list looked suitable. I voted for Elba, simply because the remaining male actors on the list looked like Bond to me either.
He gets my vote. He has the look of the Bond in the books as stipulated by Fleming (i.e. a better-looking version of Hoagy Carmichael). He also has a good physique—not too muscular. He also has a slight Timothy Dalton look about him.

I know nothing about his roles or his acting, but he looks right

"I am not an entrant in the Shakespeare Stakes." - Ian Fleming
"Screw 'em." - Daniel Craig, The Best James Bond EverTM
Searched for a thread to talk about the possible next Bond.
I'm in the camp of the fans hoping for Craig to return for Bond 25 (and even in Bond 26 for that matter.)
But I defenitely have to say, after seeing the Man from U.N.C.L.E, Henry Cavill is now defenitely my favorite contender to follow up Craig! He looks good, he can be very funny, charming and while his role in that movie was very tongue and cheek, I think he could pull of the dangerous more serious side as well, if he wanted too.

I've been a Cavill booster since CR...but I don't think one actor will be Superman, Napoleon Solo...AND James Bond I think he would be excellent...but alas, IMO that ship has sailed.

I can't believe that I'm saying this but his too much of a pretty boy

He's definitely a pretty boy, but he's also too muscular. That was a problem I had with him as Solo. Muscular guys don't look good in suits.

The muscular thing goes away pretty fast if it needs to. But during UNCLE he was right about to do the Supe-Bat thing.

Great pick. He's been in some stuff but nothing big and he's eye candy so we could get back to Bond being sexy rather than looking weathered.

Easily favor him a lot above Edris Elba.

That's okay. I understand some things need to be repeated.
