Watch help.

Hi all,

It's that time when I'm looking to add to my watch collection. I currently have the Aqua terra (skyfall) can anyone recommend either the planet ocean or the casino royale seamaster 300? I would go for the new one but not having a date window really bothers me for £4170. Anyone have both that could give me an overview of pros and cons? Bear in mind it'll be for everyday use, subject to recreational diving, occasional manual work. All helps appreciated!!

If your question is Planet Ocean or Seamaster Professional Diver the reply is PO.

The newer co-axial POs are fairly chunky and as an everyday user, as above, would be prone to knocks. I'd be more inclined to get the older PO used and put it on a NATO strap. That would tick all the boxes and (almost) leave enough for a new Seamaster...

Higgins, thanks, I'm leaning towards the PO I think the seamaster pro is purely because I feel it's a must for the collection. And as Uncle pointed out. Buying the older PO may leave enough for the pro sooner than expected after.

Comparibably, despite the size issue as mentioned, what's the pros and cons for the older and newer PO?

I have the new(er) SMP 300 with the ceramic bezel. Not a watch worn by Bond in any of the movies but when deciding which 'Bondesque' watch would be my first (and so far only) luxury watch this was the one I wanted. I had narrowed my choice to the SMP, the PO and the Rolex 116040.

I like it better than the original SMP with the wave dail, this one looks a bit sleeker IMHO. I have been wearing the watch almost exclusively for more than two years now and love it as much, if not more, as the day I bought it.

So maybe not really answering your question but you might want to give it a look, maybe you will like it as much as I do.

Don't think there are pros or cons, only differences.
The size issue is due to the movement being different (if that matters to you.) The new model has a grey ceramic bezel whereas the older one is black or orange.
The new model also has a glass back so you can see the movement.

Personally, I think the older watch is more adaptable , being slimmer and would sit better on a NATO.

Peppermill i do like the watch, however my personal preference is the wave dial. I do agree it's sleek look is appealing. I've been looking at the older and newer PO model. And I really can't decide on looks. IMO, they both look great in their own way. Again, given everyday use, does it really make a huge difference living with the size?

    Just my four penneth worth. I've previously owned all the Bond special edition Omegas up to but not including the Skyfall piece where the retail price just got too silly for this collector. My favourite was the Quantum of Solace Planet Ocean. A handsome time piece with a very discreet Quantum logo laser engraved onto the crystal. The dial was modelled on the grip pattern of a Walther PPK which was a nice touch. I only mention this because Watchfinder currently have one which is only a few hundred pounds more than its original 2012 retail price. It may be worth considering? -{

Personally, and this is my two cents. I always saw the seamaster prof 300m as a great watch, a good balance between sporty and elegant, however I saw saw it as a hand over from the Brosan era during now what is Craig's time as Bond. The Planet Ocean and Aqua Terra mark DC's Bond. Since you already have AT, I would get the PO, and add the DC era of collectibles.

I have the SF AT, QS PO and both the PO and SMP from CR...

Just added a Nato to the CR PO to freshen it whilst I see what happens re the SP SM300mc... Got loads of comments on Sat whilst jewellery shop browsing...

Personally I use them all differently. SMP for work, PO CR for out and about daytime. SF AT for smarter and QS PO for specials !!!

If you have the SF AT Id go for SMP and save for an 08/09 PO next...

    Stefan,

I've never thought about it that way. Again, I just feel the seamaster pro is kind of a must for the collection. Everything's pointing in the direction of the PO.

As for limited editions, as much as I like to look at them they personally aren't for me.

The wave dial Seamaster is still my favourite. The later models don't even come close!

Funny how that goes. I always liked the looks of the wave dail SMP but never thought it was for me. When I saw the SMP ceramic in real life for the first time I knew that was going to be my next watch.

I have to say that the newer PO with the 8500 movement is really a lot clunkier than the older 2500 one. Comparing the two side by side really shows the difference, maybe you can find a shop that has both so you can compare and see what you like best. Somehow I think the design of the PO suits itself to the new thicker case but I know people who absolutely hate the new design.

Either way, make sure you choose the one that you like best, all are great (looking) watches. When you find the one you want you will know it the instant you try it on. At least, that was what happened to me.

The Planet Ocean 2500 gets my vote throw in rubber OEM and you get two for the price of one (and its thinner and less weight that the Skyfall PO 8500)

I own the PO Ti (the watch Bond should have worn due to its robustness and lighter weight) and the chunkier size compared to the PO 2500 is noticeable especially with a cuffed shirt. Also the Black PO seems more versatile in terms of what it can be worn with just my opinion.

I also own the Brosnan SMP Chrono a classic to be added to any collection (though I do like the look of the Later CO AX version from CR)

Good luck and to be honest you will not go far wrong with either PO

    Cheers :007)

I think, for personal preference, the new PO is probably going to be the one I get. The only thing that is slightly concerning me is a lot of reviews say it sits too high on the wrist? Anyone got one they could take some images to show if it'll be a problem. I'm currently in Mauritius on holiday so need to wait to get back to head into a boutique to try one. Hoped some images would help in the meantime.

The height on the wrist only really matters if you are going to wear a cuffed shirt. French cuffs are the worst the watch usually sits outside the cuff with the 8500 but same shirt with 2500 it will sit just under the cuff (or you just get longer stem cuff links to solve). Normal button cuffs can see the 8500 sit under the cuff a little more.

Some have said they bump and knock the 8500 more and the weight difference is noticeable but cannot say I have noticed (but then again with Ti version is lighter and would have few marks anyway)

Below is a side by side shot to help

    Cheers :-)

Thanks. Knocking it is my concern. Am I right in saying the old model you could scratch the bezel? Whereas the new ceramic it's more durable?

The newer ceramic bezel is supposedly more robust but on other sites I have heard that it can still mark (though seems a good rubber/ eraser can remove light marks). The 2500 bezel is metal and thus can scratch but that said mine is my daily wear (or gets the most) and is still unmarked after 5 years and I am a military man so probably has rougher use than most.

It really does depend on how much you will be using it and what you wear it for. For every day use it should not be a major concern but anything can happen and it's a risk we all take with such watches when worn daily (a quick visit to your local Omega store can probably solve all but the deepest scratches on ceramic then it's bezel replacement thereafter).

    Good luck

    Cheers :-)

Everyday use military conditions i would say is a fairly good measure of durability. Ha! I'm planning on wearing it everyday so I want to make sure I have the right one. All your feedback is appreciated!!

PO for me I have the limited edition Casino Royale one and love it.
Sounds stupid but the rubber strap is useless and I've replaced 3 in 8 years and thats purely swimming and a bit of diving.
Change to the spectre nato strap and everyone says it looks awesome and SA.
Fabulous daily watch I then switch to my seamaster for evenings out. all round winner :007)

Very similar to the plan in my head. Planet ocean daily. Then evening and occasions Aqua terra. I've heard the rubber can be a bit poor. More the new rubber than the old. Seems to be a lot of love for the planet ocean.

I have the original PO on rubber and use it for my day to day wear. It has a couple of marks where I have dinged it but to me that just adds a bit of character. I dont think any watch it totaly mark proof, it just depends on how clumsy you are.

When I bought my SM300 a few months ago the guy in the shop was wearing the newer version of the PO and I was suprised at how high it sat and if I am honest, I didnt like it as much. His shirt cuff was bunched up and couldn't sit right because of the height. I have had the same problem with my PO a double cuff shirts but it is usually ok with a standard one.

    I am sure you will love whatever you go for and remember, you can always add to the collection :D -{

If you ultimately decide on a PO 2500. I would look for ones made in 2011 or later and has a Serial Number starting with 85xxxxx. This model uses the D series of the 2500 movement and while the C series was fine, there are some instances of a C just stopping. I just went through this exact exercise and ultimately went the PO 2500 as the 8500 was too chunky and sat too high of my wrist, but then again this is all personal opinion. Mine came with all the strap options, i.e. rubber and leather strap and a SS bracelet. Again, personally, I had to change it to the SS bracelet.

If I remember rightly, it did take some getting used to at first, as the weight of the watch was noticeable on the wrist, especially at work while typing etc. The size has never really been an issue, I was more aware of it at first, always making sure I wasn't banging it, but it was the weight that I remember more (This was when I had it on SS bracelet.)
Having said that, after a week or two it was fine. Now I have it on NATO, it obviously weighs that bit less, but I do swap back to the bracelet from time to time with no issues.
