Respected or loved ...... which is better ?

I got to thinking this morning, ....
Sir Roger is loved by the Bond community, and public, but he doesn't get a lot of
Respect from some for his performance as 007.
While ....
Timothy Dalton, is respected by many for his approach to playing Bond,
but there doesn't seem to be anywhere near the same level of love for him.
So given the choice, would you rather be respected ( in life in general) or if
You got to play Bond. Or Would you rather be popular with everyone thinking
You're lovely ?

In business I would rather have respect. In my private life I would rather be loved. Cannot see much of that from the ex-wife though ) ) )

Sir Rog is universally loved I would think and also respected as James Bond - he certainly is not everyone's cup of tea as Bond (especially me in his latter films) but I think he has most people's respect in that he ensured that the Bond canon remained viable over a long period of time.

Roger is a great guy, and no matter how tough he played it (twisting Andrea's arm or kicking Loque's car) that basic quality still shone through. You can't help but love the guy. Which is a mixed blessing for Bond, I think.

At least I have an excuse, 10 years ago, I was only 25-ish and not on AJB.
So please don't hold it against me.
Although I do agree with your assessment of the actors, ..... love v respect.

Glad you liked that....

For what it's worth: on seeing TLD almost thirty years ago, I was thrilled to see Dalton's interpretation of James Bond. I'd entered with no preconceived ideas and was just keen to see what this new guy would do. Seeing the Fleming short story brought to life and expanded on was genuinely enthralling, and Dalton's very Flemingesque Bond was a breath of fresh air. John Barry's music was perfection itself, and seeing the man himself onscreen near the end of the movie certainly didn't hurt.
Sure, TLD isn't an ideal Bond movie- it lacks a villain of Goldfinger status, for example- but its star was NOT a problem and indeed a major asset. Dalton didn't opt to take the easy route, and his take on Bond was not to everyone's taste (Hello, Higgins) but it's certainly to mine.

Yet, despite all that, he isn't my favourite Bond....

or even my second....

so a Timboy I am not but respect is due and dismissal is not.

In my eyes, Connery (at his best) is equaled only (in a different way, of course) by Dalton. As much as I love the others, they are tops for me. :x

It may sound strange, but Connery at his best presents a rounded Bond (as opposed to a one-dimensional character) more than any of the other actors yet still manages to convey a fantasy figure, idealised in most respects. He has flaws, yet remains the kind of man that can be aspired to. The other actors are in his shadow- some capture certain aspects of it as well if not better (Moore gets the fantasy side of Bond better than anyone), some don't.

I agree, Bond is in fact a much more complicated and layered character than at first sight.
It's not an easy gig for any actor.

I'd really like to agree with you but something inside can't agree.
Maybe it's Connery's personality in real life - maybe it's his performance and appearance in DAF.

To me, there is no "best Bond actor" They all are very different - the tone of the series has changed multiple times and so have expectations of franchise owners and audiences - not to mention varying qualities of scripts/directors and so on.

Each Bond movie is something special - even DAF and the crappy Dalton ones :v and I really fail to compare or rate the main actors.

To a certain degree, I respect them all (note: not their fanbase ) but as TP said, it's difficult not to love Sir Roger.
